As the new Premier League season edges closer, Tottenham Hotspur are making serious moves to strengthen their midfield.
One of their key targets, Joao Palhinha, is just a medical away from becoming the next piece in Ange Postecoglou’s revamped squad.
Medical Set for Friday as Palhinha Prepares for Premier League Return
Palhinha is scheduled to undergo his medical in Germany this Friday, with a season-long loan to Spurs nearly wrapped up.
The deal reportedly includes an option for Tottenham to buy the Portuguese midfielder outright for £26 million — a significant cut from what Bayern Munich paid for him just last summer.
From Bayern Bench to North London Revival
The 30-year-old midfielder joined Bayern Munich for £47.4 million a year ago, but things never really took off for him in Germany.
Despite his best efforts to earn a spot under new manager Vincent Kompany, it’s become clear he’s not in the club’s long-term plans.
With three years still left on his contract at Bayern, Palhinha is now ready for a fresh chapter in England.
Spurs Beat Out Rivals for Palhinha’s Signature
Fulham — where Palhinha was a standout performer — were keen to bring him back, and there was interest from other Premier League clubs as well.
But it’s Tottenham who got the deal over the line.
According to reports, Spurs have agreed to take on his sizeable wages, with Thomas Frank pushing for his arrival to add steel and experience to the midfield.
A Likely Exit for Bissouma on the Horizon
Palhinha’s move could mean the writing’s on the wall for Yves Bissouma.
His time in North London has been a mixed bag, and with Spurs bringing in another top-level midfielder, Bissouma could soon be heading out.
Whether it’s a loan or a permanent deal remains to be seen.
Palhinha’s Fulham Form Made Him a Premier League Favourite
During his two years at Fulham, Palhinha made quite the impression.
He clocked up 79 appearances and was even crowned the club’s Player of the Season in 2022–23.
Known for his tough tackling and tireless work ethic, his performances turned heads across the league — and clearly left a lasting impression on Spurs.
From Sporting Roots to International Stage
Before arriving in the Premier League, Palhinha came up through Sporting Lisbon’s academy and had stints on loan at Moreirense, Belenenses, and Braga.
His steady rise earned him a regular spot in Portugal’s national team setup, and now he’s set to bring that international pedigree back to England.
Spurs Already Building Momentum in the Window
Palhinha will be Tottenham’s fourth summer signing — and their second transfer involving Bayern Munich this window.
Earlier, the club made Mathys Tel’s move permanent after a successful loan spell last season.
More Moves Ahead as Spurs Sharpen Their Squad
While Palhinha’s arrival is a big one, Tottenham aren’t done yet.
They’re still looking to make further additions, and there are ongoing talks about a new contract for wing-back Djed Spence.
Postecoglou seems determined to build a balanced, deep squad before the new campaign kicks off.
What’s Next: Bayern Friendly, PSG Clash, and Premier League Kickoff
Tottenham will get an immediate look at their transfer dealings when they face Bayern Munich in a pre-season clash at the Allianz Arena next Thursday. That’s followed by a showdown with Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup on August 13, before Spurs launch their Premier League season at home against Burnley on August 16.
