Just when the Patriotic Alliance (PA) was gaining traction in South African politics, the party has found itself facing a storm of controversy — and it’s one that its top leadership is handling head-on.

Gayton McKenzie Suspends His Deputy Over Alleged Crime Figure Link

PA president Gayton McKenzie has taken decisive action by suspending his deputy, Kenny Kunene, following public uproar over Kunene’s alleged association with accused crime syndicate kingpin, Katiso Molefe.

In a strongly worded statement, McKenzie emphasized that the party holds transparency and accountability in the highest regard.

“Until he is fully cleared, Kenny Kunene will not serve in any official role within the PA,” McKenzie confirmed.

Independent Investigation Already in Motion

To ensure fairness and credibility, the party has launched a formal investigation into the situation, led by an independent legal team.

McKenzie added that Kunene is cooperating fully, and arrangements for investigators are already being finalized.

Kunene Admits Being at Molefe’s Home During His Arrest

The controversy exploded after Kunene admitted he had been at Katiso Molefe’s Sandton residence when the alleged underworld figure was arrested.

Molefe is the prime suspect in the 2022 murder of well-known musician DJ Sumbody.

Although Kunene claims he has no personal relationship with Molefe and was simply accompanying a journalist to the house for an exclusive interview, his presence at the scene triggered widespread backlash and raised serious questions about judgment.

Stepping Down from City of Johannesburg Positions

On top of his suspension from the party, Kunene has also resigned from his official roles within the City of Johannesburg.

He was serving as a Proportional Representation Councillor and the city’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport.

In his resignation letter, Kunene said the allegations are baseless but explained that he is stepping back from public office to allow the party space to conduct its inquiry.

“I believe the claims are unfounded, but I respect the process,” he wrote.

Patriotic Alliance Tries to Hold the Line

With public scrutiny intensifying, McKenzie’s swift action is being seen by many as an attempt to protect the party’s image and reaffirm its commitment to ethical leadership.

He urged supporters to stay united during what he described as a “difficult moment” for the party, as it works to strengthen its presence in local government.

Leadership and Integrity on the Line

Political commentators suggest that how McKenzie handles this matter could define both his leadership and the future credibility of the PA.

It’s also a major test of whether the party can live up to its promise of clean governance.

As for Kunene, the outcome of the investigation will likely determine whether he has a future in politics — or if this marks the final chapter in his political career.
