Cape Town City lodge OFFICIAL protest against Kaizer Chiefs replay ruling

Amakhosi failed to honour the fixture due to a Covid-19 outbreak among their players and staff.

The PSL initially charged Kaizer Chiefs for not showing up, but SAFA arbitrator Nazeer Cassim overturned the ruling on 22 March and granted Kaizer Chiefs a replay for the called-off matches against Cape Town City and Golden Arrows.

Naturally, Cape Town City were not happy with the decision as the automatic three log points they were under the impression they would be receiving are now back up for grabs.

The Citizens are heavily involved in the battle for CAF spots next season and are currently in third place in the standings with 40 points after 24 matches.

Tinkler confirmed that the Cape side has set in motion an official protest.

“The Chiefs game, I don’t even think about that, because that’s not in my hands,” said Tinkler after Cape Town City’s 1-1 draw with Royal AM on Saturday.

“That, I’ll leave to the chairman. But I know we’ve put in a protest against that. So whether that game will take place or not, is for me right now, I don’t even think about it, I think about the next game, which is Sundowns.

“I approach the Sundowns game the way we had already planned and prepared. We have what is it eight days, nine days to prep for that game, because the game got moved, it was supposed to be on the weekend, so now it got moved obviously to midweek.”

Cape Town City are next in action away against Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday, 27 April at 19:30.
