This surprising insight comes from a new study just published in ScienceDirect, and it’s got researchers — and health experts — talking.


The Link Between Soda and Memory Problems

The study dove into how sugary sodas affect brain function, and the results weren’t exactly comforting.

Researchers noticed that regular consumption of cola drinks could actually impair memory and slow down mental processes.

To dig deeper, they turned to lab rats. But not just any rats — these were genetically modified to mimic the kind of brain changes that happen as we get older.

The goal? To find out how these drinks might influence an aging brain.


How the Study Was Set Up

The rats were split into two groups. One had a normal water-only diet, while the other got both water and cola-based soda for 67 days.

Throughout the experiment, the rats had to complete various maze challenges to test how well their brains were functioning.

And the results came quickly.

  • Younger rats (around 2 to 8 months old) began showing memory problems pretty fast.

  • Older rats (14 months) didn’t show immediate cognitive decline, but their brain tissue told another story — it showed a buildup of damaging compounds.

  • No matter the age, oxidative stress — which is bad news for brain cells — showed up in the rats that drank soda.


Young Brains at Higher Risk

What really stood out to researchers was how much more vulnerable younger brains seemed to be.

But that doesn’t mean older brains got off easy.

The study concluded that sugary sodas had a negative effect across the board — just in different ways.

Even mature rats, who seemed mentally fine on the outside, were experiencing silent damage inside their brains.
