As the new season creeps closer, Orlando Pirates are making serious moves to strengthen their squad—but there’s still a glaring gap up front.
Despite bringing in a hefty 11 new players, only one of those signings is a striker, and that’s raising eyebrows among fans and pundits alike.
Goal-Scoring Woes from Last Season Still Linger
Last season saw the Buccaneers struggle to find the back of the net consistently.
At times, midfielders like Mohau Nkota and Relebohile Mofokeng were forced to step up in front of goal as the club’s actual strikers couldn’t quite deliver.
It’s clear the team needs a more reliable option up front if they’re going to challenge seriously this season.
Zambian Striker Enock Sakala Jr. on Their Radar
Now, the spotlight is on Enock Sakala Jr., a Zambian forward who’s being heavily linked with the Soweto giants.
Although his brief stint at Chippa United didn’t set the league alight—he managed just one goal in six appearances—Pirates are still showing interest.
According to Soccer Laduma, Sakala has been training with the Pirates and made a decent impression during his time with the squad.
Pirates Keeping Their Options Open
A source close to the situation in Zambia told the publication, “He seems to have impressed during his time with the squad, but Pirates are still keeping their options open.”
It appears the club is in no rush to make a decision and might still explore other international options.
“They want someone who can hit the ground running, a striker who can contribute immediately and help the team compete for trophies,” the source added.
Current Striker Situation: Is It Enough?
At the moment, Pirates have Tshegofatso Mabasa, Evidence Makgopa, Boitumelo Radiopane, and Yanela Mbuthuma among their forward options.
However, the club might be re-evaluating the depth and impact of that group.
One notable name who seems to be on the outs is Zakhele Lepasa.
He hasn’t featured since the 2023/24 season and notably wasn’t part of the squad that traveled to Spain for pre-season preparations.
That’s usually a big sign that a player is on their way out.
Are Pirates Ready to Challenge Mamelodi Sundowns?
With all these pieces moving, the big question is: Can the Buccaneers mount a serious title challenge against reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns?
That could depend heavily on whether they get the right striker in before the season kicks off.
