When a club with Liverpool’s history hits a rough patch, fans instantly begin to wonder whether the season can still be rescued.
And even though the current campaign has felt unusually shaky, former striker Michael Owen still thinks there’s a narrow window for a dramatic turnaround.
Liverpool’s Tough Stretch
Under Arne Slot, Liverpool have slipped far below expectations, tumbling to 12th place after dropping six of their last seven league fixtures.
Their latest setback — a 3-0 loss at Anfield to Nottingham Forest — only deepened the frustration.
Considering the club invested about £450 million during the summer, sitting 11 points behind Arsenal already has many supporters sounding alarms.
Why Owen Still Sees a Chance
Despite all that, Owen isn’t ready to rule them out.
Speaking on the Mennie Talks Podcast, the 45-year-old shared why he thinks the title is still “within reach,” even if the odds aren’t exactly friendly.
He pointed to flashes of brilliance throughout the season — moments that remind him why this squad shouldn’t be written off.
He highlighted their impressive showing against Real Madrid, where the 1-0 scoreline didn’t reflect how dominant Liverpool looked.
He also mentioned strong spells against Aston Villa and their big win over Arsenal at Anfield.
Not Losing to Pushovers
Owen also argued that the defeats haven’t come from poor teams steamrolling them.
Losses to Manchester United, Chelsea, and Manchester City were tight, competitive matches where Liverpool played well but didn’t get the result.
In his view, that matters. It’s not like Liverpool are collapsing against lower-level opponents — they’re just falling short in key moments.
Where the Problems Still Lie
But Owen didn’t sugarcoat anything.
He acknowledged the inconsistency, pointing specifically to their 1-0 Champions League defeat to Galatasaray, which he described as a particularly weak performance.
He stressed that Liverpool aren’t playing badly overall — they simply can’t sustain their good spells long enough to build momentum.
And until that changes, the results will continue to look erratic.
Arsenal Still the Favourites
Even with his optimism for Liverpool, Owen admitted that the Premier League crown looks more likely to land at the Emirates this season.
He praised Arsenal’s steadiness, saying they’ve been strangely underrated given what they’ve achieved — including a Champions League semi-final run and finishing second in the league.
According to Owen, winning titles usually comes after years of pushing, improving, and coming close. For him, it feels like Arsenal’s turn in that cycle.
What’s Next?
If Liverpool want to keep their faint title hopes alive, they’ll need to flip those bright “patches” into consistent performances — fast.
The talent is there, the foundation is solid, and the season still has time left, but unless they pull together a long unbeaten run soon, the Premier League trophy might drift firmly into Arsenal’s hands.
