The New York Giants left fans scratching their heads after a puzzling fourth-quarter decision cost them a chance to seal the game against the Detroit Lions.
Even former President Donald Trump chimed in, questioning the choice on social media.
Controversial Call in the Red Zone
With just under three minutes remaining, the Giants were clinging to a 27-24 lead.
Driving deep into Lions territory, they faced a 4th & Goal from the six-yard line.
Rather than take the safer route with a field goal to extend their lead to six points, New York went for the touchdown, aiming to make it a two-possession game.
The plan fell apart. Quarterback Jameis Winston’s pass came up incomplete.
Detroit capitalized, kicking a field goal and eventually rallying to win in overtime.
Trump Questions Giants’ Strategy
The unusual decision did not go unnoticed. Posting on Truth Social, Donald Trump expressed his disbelief:
“Why did the New York Football Giants (NFL) not kick that Field Goal??? Who would have done such a thing? It was CRAZY! I got to watch the end of the game and thought, when they went for the touchdown instead of the 3, ‘That’s Weird!!!'”
Winston Shines Despite Loss
While the outcome was disappointing, Winston’s performance was a silver lining for a struggling Giants roster.
He completed 18 of 36 passes for 366 yards, tossing two touchdowns against one interception.
The team has been dealing with injuries to rookie quarterbacks Cam Skattebo and Jaxson Dart, making Winston’s leadership even more critical.
Lions’ Star Running Back Dominates
Detroit’s victory was powered by running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who torched the Giants for 219 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground, adding another 45 yards and a receiving touchdown through the air.
His all-around performance proved impossible for New York to contain.
Giants’ Season Woes Continue
The loss dropped New York to 2-10 on the season, keeping their playoff hopes all but out of reach.
Their next challenge is a tough Monday Night Football showdown against the league-leading New England Patriots, where the Giants will need more than gutsy calls—they’ll need a clean execution to have any shot.
