A quiet neighborhood in St Helens has been left reeling after a devastating fire claimed the lives of a beloved elderly couple.
What started as reports of a house fire in the early hours quickly turned into a heartbreaking story of loss and suspicion, as police now investigate the blaze as a possible deliberate attack.
Beloved Couple Lost in Suspicious Blaze
Peter Eric Greener, 77, and his partner Sheila Jackson, 83, were rushed to hospital after firefighters arrived to find their home engulfed in flames.
Tragically, Peter died the following day, and Sheila passed away just hours later.
Police have described the incident as an “absolutely sickening” suspected arson attack involving what may have been a petrol bomb.
The couple, who had been together for 30 years and lived in the same end-terrace house on South John Street for 15 years, were known as lovely, kind neighbors—people who kept to themselves but were warmly regarded by those around them.
Neighbors Remember a Close-Knit Community Devastated by Loss
Residents say the couple’s sudden deaths have left the whole community “in shock.”
Chris, a nearby father and resident, recalled how both had been frail after recent hospital stays but never caused any trouble.
“They were lovely, lovely people,” Chris said.
“I have no idea why anyone would do this here.
It’s such a tight-knit community, and we’re all gutted. We’re supporting the police and just want justice.”
Other neighbors expressed similar heartbreak, describing the atmosphere as “raw” and the loss deeply felt among friends and family.
Investigators Find Evidence of Malicious Fire-Starting
Merseyside Police, working with the Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed that an accelerant was used to start the fire, suggesting it was set intentionally.
One neighbor, Gavin Thelwell, witnessed the flames blocking firefighters’ access to the front door, delaying rescue efforts.
“They had to put out the fire on the door before getting inside,” Gavin explained.
“It’s so sad because they were good people, always friendly. I still can’t believe this happened.”
Police Launch Murder Investigation and Appeal for Witnesses
Detective Chief Inspector Steve McGrath, leading the inquiry, expressed deep condolences to the grieving family and vowed to find whoever is responsible.
“This is a truly shocking incident,” McGrath said.
“It’s hard to imagine someone deliberately starting a fire with two elderly people inside.
We’re determined to bring those responsible to justice.”
The investigation is still in early stages, and officers are working to uncover the motive behind the fire.
Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson added that many questions remain, including why the couple’s home was targeted.
Community Called on to Help Solve the Case
Police are urging anyone who lives near South John Street or who may have seen or heard anything suspicious around midnight on July 15 to come forward.
Residents with CCTV or doorbell footage are especially encouraged to review recordings for any clues.
DCI McGrath asked local drivers with dashcams in the area between midnight and 1 a.m. to check their footage and contact police if they captured anything relevant.
Information can be submitted anonymously through Merseyside Police’s dedicated web page or via the charity Crimestoppers.
Neighbors Leave Heartfelt Tributes for the “Loveliest People”
Flowers and messages have been left outside the home, expressing the community’s sorrow.
One tribute read, “There are no words to express the sadness we feel that this senseless act happened to two of the loveliest people we had the pleasure of knowing. May you rest in peace together.”
Friends also shared memories and heartfelt words, promising to cherish the moments they had with Peter and Sheila forever.
