While many South Africans are wrapping up their workweek and planning for a relaxing weekend, residents along the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal might want to hold off on any outdoor plans.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has sounded the alarm, warning of heavy rainfall expected to hit the region on Saturday, 20 July — and it’s not just a passing drizzle.

Expect Persistent Downpours and Flooding Risks

According to SAWS, communities along the coastal belt and nearby areas could be drenched by rainfall measuring between 30mm and 50mm.

These wet conditions are expected to be more intense along the southern coastal regions of KZN, with inland areas getting off a bit lighter.

“While some areas will see isolated rain, the south coast and southern parts of KwaZulu-Natal are likely to experience more consistent rainfall,” SAWS explained in a statement released on Friday.

The prolonged rain could result in localised flooding, especially in areas already prone to water build-up.

What This Means for Infrastructure and Travel

The weather service also raised concerns about how the rain might affect both urban and rural areas.

Communities living in low-lying or informal settlements should take particular caution, as floodwaters could damage homes and create hazardous conditions.

Here’s what SAWS is warning could happen:

  • Roads and bridges could become waterlogged

  • Visibility may be severely reduced on highways and local roads

  • Driving conditions on dirt roads will be especially tough

  • Homes made with mud or other fragile materials may suffer structural damage

Motorists are being urged to stay alert, avoid attempting to cross flooded roads, and follow any emergency updates issued over the weekend.

Weekend Weather Snapshot

Looking ahead to the rest of the weekend, the broader forecast for KwaZulu-Natal and beyond includes:

  • Partly cloudy conditions in the eastern parts of the country

  • Isolated to scattered showers in various areas, particularly southern KZN

  • Cool to cold temperatures expected across interior regions

  • Coastal areas along the west and south coasts may also experience damaging waves

Stay Informed and Stay Safe

SAWS is encouraging all residents in affected areas to keep up to date with weather advisories and listen to instructions from local disaster management teams.

If you’re in a flood-prone zone, now’s a good time to check your emergency plans and avoid unnecessary travel.
