Belgium’s World Cup qualifying campaign hit a bump on Saturday as they could only manage a draw against Kazakhstan, leaving players frustrated and Jeremy Doku openly critical of his teammates.
The Red Devils had a chance to secure their spot in next summer’s tournament but now face added pressure ahead of their clash with Liechtenstein on Tuesday.
Kazakhstan Shock Belgium Early
The match started disastrously for Belgium. Kazakhstan’s Dastan Satpaev pounced on a loose ball to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead, putting the visitors on the back foot.
Despite Belgium being the stronger side on paper, they struggled to break down their opponents, even after Kazakhstan were reduced to ten men.
Hans Vanaken eventually equalized, but Belgium couldn’t find a winner, leaving Doku visibly frustrated.
Doku Calls for Accountability
Speaking after the match, the Man City star didn’t hold back.
“We’ve already dropped too many points because we weren’t good enough in a large number of matches,” he said.
“Our campaign hasn’t gone well. Everyone needs to do better—the coach, me, everyone.
Kevin, Romelu, Thibaut—if we need them to win against Kazakhstan, then we can’t do anything at the World Cup.”
Doku added that the team struggled to adapt to Kazakhstan’s tactics. “We thought they would play long, but they played short and started playing football.
It was a completely different match than last time. Maybe we didn’t analyse our opponent enough.”
Defender Arthur Theate Reacts to Criticism
Belgium defender Arthur Theate also expressed his frustration, particularly regarding criticism of the defense.
“I get the impression you’re always questioning the defense. If you feel like it, go ahead,” he said.
“Of course we shouldn’t have conceded that goal, but we haven’t conceded many goals this campaign.
Otherwise, we weren’t put in much danger. I just think we’re having a good campaign defensively.”
Red Devils Remain Top of Group J
Despite the hiccup in Kazakhstan, Belgium still lead Group J, two points ahead of North Macedonia and Wales.
A draw against Liechtenstein on Tuesday would likely be enough to secure automatic qualification for the World Cup.
Meanwhile, North Macedonia and Wales face off in a crucial match to determine the play-off spot.
Belgium will now aim to bounce back quickly, building on their strong defensive record and key performances from players like Vanaken, as they look to close out qualification with confidence.
