What started out as a proud moment for former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler quickly turned into a storm of online criticism.

The 42-year-old recently shared photos from a hunting trip in South Africa, but instead of admiration, the internet responded with anger.

A “Trophy” Shot That Didn’t Sit Well

Cutler posted multiple images showing off the Sable antelope he had hunted, captioning one shot: “Kicked off the Africa hunt with a beauty. Sable down.”

While he may have been celebrating the beginning of his hunting trip, many felt the post crossed a line.

Social media platforms quickly lit up with comments expressing outrage and heartbreak, with critics calling out the insensitivity of posing with a vulnerable species.

Why the Sable Antelope Matters

The Sable antelope, known for its striking horns and majestic stature, isn’t just any wild animal.

It’s listed as a vulnerable species by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI).

These animals face growing threats from habitat loss, climate change, and illegal poaching.

Typically found in Kruger National Park and other protected reserves, Sables are part of active conservation efforts.

The sight of one being hunted — and proudly displayed online — was too much for many animal lovers and conservation advocates to bear.

Social Media Didn’t Hold Back

Instagram users wasted no time voicing their disgust.

One commenter wrote, “I went to Africa on a safari and saw the most incredible wildlife and never once thought about murdering them.”

Another chimed in, “What a cruel ‘hobby,’ Jay. Shame on you for killing this beautiful animal. It breaks my heart.”

Even more personal comments emerged, with some users taking a jab at Cutler’s past controversies, including his split from ex-wife Kristin Cavallari, and his 2024 arrest in Tennessee for DUI and possession of a firearm.

“Kristin really dodged a bullet,” one user added.

A History of Hunting — And Trouble

Cutler has long been open about his love for hunting, but this time, the reaction wasn’t just about the sport — it was about the message.

Sharing images of killing a vulnerable animal, especially in a country where wildlife conservation is critical, felt tone-deaf to many.

It didn’t help that Cutler’s image has taken a few hits in recent years.

His 2022 divorce and legal issues in 2024 have kept his name in the headlines — and not in a good way.

A Bigger Conversation About Trophy Hunting

The backlash against Cutler also reignited the wider debate around trophy hunting, particularly when it involves species at risk of extinction. Should celebrities use their platform to promote it? And should hunting for sport be allowed at all?

While Cutler hasn’t responded to the criticism, the wave of online reaction shows that more and more people are no longer okay with seeing wildlife turned into trophies — especially when the animals are already fighting for survival.
