Nigerian students embrace innovation challenge as QAPS launches hands-on sustainability programme across secondary schools

QAPS

If you’ve ever looked around your community and thought, “There has to be a better way to do this”, then the QAPS Sustainability Innovation Challenge might be the perfect opportunity to turn those ideas into action.

This exciting four-week holiday programme is giving Nigerian secondary school students a platform to create real solutions to environmental challenges—whether it’s cutting down plastic waste, conserving water, or making clean energy more accessible.

This isn’t just about theory. It’s a hands-on journey into innovation, teamwork, and impact—and it’s officially open for applications.

What the Challenge Is All About

The QAPS Sustainability Innovation Challenge is open to both Junior and Senior Secondary School students across Nigeria.

Participants will form teams, get guided by a teacher mentor, and dive into projects that tackle sustainability issues head-on.

The programme is built around three core areas:

  • Clean energy

  • Water conservation

  • Responsible plastic use

It’s about sparking creativity, encouraging collaboration, and getting students to think deeply about how they can contribute to a greener future—not just in school, but in their homes and communities, too.

Who Can Join and How It Works

The challenge is designed for student teams of five, each supported by one teacher mentor.

Schools are allowed to submit up to two teams, giving more students the opportunity to be part of this exciting experience.

Over the course of four weeks, students will take part in hands-on activities, interactive workshops, and brainstorming sessions.

They’ll also learn how to use cutting-edge tools like generative AI to support their research, test ideas, and build their solutions.

To inspire and guide them, global experts and guest speakers will join the programme—sharing stories, offering advice, and encouraging students to think big and act boldly.

It’s More Than a Competition—It’s a Launchpad

While there are amazing prizes to be won, the real goal is personal growth and community change.

This challenge helps students build valuable life skills—leadership, communication, teamwork, critical thinking—in a fun and supportive environment.

And yes, the prizes are pretty exciting, too.

Here’s what’s up for grabs:

  •  1st place: ₦300,000

  •  2nd place: ₦200,000

  •  3rd place: ₦100,000

In total, there’s ₦1.5 million in prize value, and additional awards for categories like most innovative idea, best team spirit, and strongest community impact.

Every participant walks away with a certificate of recognition—because just showing up and trying to make a difference is worth celebrating.

Why Students Should Apply

This is more than just a holiday programme. It’s a chance to:

  • Learn real-world sustainability skills

  • Get creative with AI and new technologies

  • Collaborate with peers and mentors

Whether you’re passionate about climate action, love solving problems, or just want to try something new, the QAPS Challenge is designed to inspire and empower the next generation of changemakers.
