South Africa’s political scene is once again in the spotlight—and not for the right reasons.

Explosive accusations have been levelled against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, with mounting pressure from opposition parties and a criminal case now officially laid against him.

The calls for accountability are growing louder, and the drama isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

MK Party Pushes for Action After Explosive Claims

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party is stepping into the fray, adding fuel to the fire surrounding Mchunu.

Their Member of Parliament, David Skosana, has filed criminal charges against both Minister Mchunu and Deputy Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya.

The charges? Perjury and defeating the ends of justice.

That’s a serious accusation—and one that stems from statements made by none other than KwaZulu-Natal’s top cop.

Police Commissioner Drops a Bombshell

It all began when Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner, made jaw-dropping allegations.

He claimed that Mchunu has questionable ties to Vusimusi ‘Cat’ Matlala, a man facing serious criminal charges.

And that wasn’t all—Mkhwanazi accused both Mchunu and his alleged associate, Brown Mogotsi, of meddling in police affairs and interfering with ongoing operations.

These revelations have ignited widespread concern and outrage.

Minister Denies Any Relationship with the Accused

Minister Mchunu has since pushed back hard on the claims.

In a public statement, he insisted that he has no relationship with Matlala, the accused at the center of the controversy.

In fact, Mchunu says he personally launched a review of a R360 million health services tender awarded to Matlala back in 2024, once suspicions of corruption emerged.

According to him, the tender was eventually cancelled.

He also clarified his connection with Brown Mogotsi, saying the man is merely a “comrade,” not an associate—despite previously denying even knowing Mogotsi in Parliament.

Democratic Alliance Joins the Chorus for Justice

The Democratic Alliance (DA) isn’t staying silent either.

The opposition party plans to file criminal charges against Mchunu and is demanding investigations by the Portfolio Committees on Police and Justice.

They want answers—and they want them fast.

For the DA, the allegations are too serious to ignore, and they believe Parliament has a duty to dig deeper and hold all involved accountable.

Ramaphosa Urges Calm, Promises Response

Meanwhile, President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for calm and restraint while the matter unfolds.

He’s currently attending the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in Brazil but is expected to return soon and offer clarity on how his administration will move forward in handling the matter.

The President’s silence so far has drawn criticism, but insiders say he’s carefully considering the best course of action behind the scenes.

Growing Calls for Mchunu to Step Aside

As investigations loom and political tensions simmer, many are now asking a pointed question—should Senzo Mchunu step aside while the allegations are being investigated?

Some believe stepping down temporarily would preserve the integrity of the Police Ministry.

Others feel he should stay until the facts are clear. But one thing’s certain: the pressure is mounting.
