In a move that caught many fans off guard, Oswin Appollis has officially joined Orlando Pirates, leaving behind Polokwane City and rumors of a Kaizer Chiefs deal in the rearview mirror.
And while the transfer is stirring plenty of excitement, not everyone thinks it guarantees him a starting spot.
Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has weighed in, sharing his admiration for the 23-year-old’s journey and resilience—but also offering a word of caution about the competition he’ll face in his new squad.
From Setbacks to the Big Time
Khanye praised Appollis for bouncing back after being released by SuperSport United’s development team, calling his road back to the top “inspiring.”
According to Khanye, the young forward showed mental toughness by picking himself up, relocating from Cape Town to Polokwane, and starting over without the comfort of close family.
“That takes a strong mind,” Khanye said in an interview with iDiski Times.
“A lot of guys don’t come back from that. But he kept pushing and made a name for himself again.”
Bafana Bafana Recognition Seals the Comeback
Khanye highlighted Appollis’ recent rise to prominence with the Bafana Bafana national team.
Not only has he made the squad, but he’s also scored crucial goals in World Cup qualifiers, becoming a regular under coach Hugo Broos.
“He’s earned his spot, and he’s played a big role for the national team,” Khanye added.
“So yes, this is a good signing for Pirates.”
Not a Guaranteed Starter at Pirates
Despite the praise, Khanye was quick to clarify that just because Appollis is a good signing doesn’t mean he’s guaranteed a spot in the starting eleven at Pirates.
The Buccaneers boast serious depth, and the competition for forward positions is fierce.
“He’s coming into a strong team with a lot of talent,” Khanye said.
“That doesn’t mean he’ll walk straight into the lineup.
He’ll have to fight for his place.”
Pre-Season in Spain Will Be His First Test
Appollis is currently in Spain with the Pirates squad for their pre-season camp, where the team is preparing with several friendly matches lined up.
It’s the perfect chance for the new signing to make his case and show that he belongs in the matchday squad.
Fans are eager to see what he brings to the table, and the upcoming friendlies could offer an early glimpse of how he fits into Enzo Maresca’s system.
Will Appollis Shine in Black and White?
The buzz is real—but can Appollis deliver for the Buccaneers on the big stage? Only time will tell.
For now, his story is already one of resilience, growth, and second chances.
