Arsenal hit major roadblock as Sporting refuse to lower Viktor Gyokeres transfer fee in Lisbon standoff

Just when Arsenal fans thought their long wait for a new striker was finally over, it looks like things might not be going as smoothly as hoped.

The Gunners’ pursuit of Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres has hit a major stumbling block, and now there are serious doubts over whether the move will happen at all.

From Confidence to Crisis in Negotiations

Earlier in the window, Arsenal were strongly linked with both Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko, but it seemed like they had firmly set their sights on the Swedish international from Sporting.

Reports suggested that Gyokeres had even agreed on pre-contract terms, and many believed he’d be pulling on a red shirt by the end of the summer.

But according to new reports from Portugal, things have stalled—and badly.

Negotiations between the two clubs have reportedly gone nowhere since the weekend, with both sides holding firm over the transfer fee.

The Numbers That Are Holding Everything Up

So, what’s the issue? It all comes down to the price tag. Gyokeres believes there was an informal agreement that he’d be allowed to leave for €60 million plus €10 million in add-ons (around £51.7m plus £8.6m). Sporting, however, aren’t seeing it that way.

Arsenal have already offered €65 million up front, plus €15 million in bonuses (about £56m and £12.9m respectively), but Sporting are demanding a flat €70 million (£60.4m) before they even consider letting him go.

As a result, the Arsenal negotiation team has reportedly left Lisbon and returned to London empty-handed after a second failed round of talks.

Arsenal Could Walk Away Altogether

It seems that Arsenal are now seriously considering pulling the plug on the whole deal unless Sporting softens their stance soon.

And that’s a big blow, especially since reports earlier in the week suggested the deal was all but done and could be announced by Thursday.

Gyokeres Wants the Move—and Is Willing to Sacrifice

Despite the deadlock between the clubs, it’s important to note that Gyokeres himself is desperate to join Arsenal.

He’s so keen, in fact, that he’s offered to give up €2 million (£1.7 million) from his future wages to help get the deal over the line.

But it’s not just a quiet preference—Gyokeres has made it clear he no longer wants to play for Sporting.

The 27-year-old forward has reportedly refused to return to training, feeling let down by the club for what he believes was a broken promise over his release terms.

Arsenal Already Have Gyokeres Lined Up Long-Term

From Arsenal’s side, they’ve already got a contract agreement in place that would keep Gyokeres at the Emirates until 2030.

But with Sporting refusing to budge, that agreement now hangs in the balance unless something gives.

Turkey Emerges as a Surprise Plan B

While Arsenal remains the Swedish striker’s first choice, he may need a Plan B if talks continue to go south.

Turkish club Fenerbahce are said to be keeping a close eye on the situation and are prepared to take him on loan if the deal with Arsenal falls apart completely.

Gyokeres, however, still has his heart set on a return to the Premier League.

The striker, who previously played for Coventry City and Brighton, reportedly remains focused on getting back to English football.

Gyokeres Still Tied to Sporting… On Paper

Technically, Gyokeres still has three years left on his Sporting contract, but given the current situation, it’s hard to imagine him seeing it out. His relationship with the club appears to be fraying fast.

And let’s not forget—he’s not just any player. Gyokeres scored 54 goals last season in all competitions, a truly remarkable tally that has made him one of Europe’s most talked-about forwards.

Arsenal’s Summer Business So Far

While the Gyokeres situation is frustrating, Arsenal have already been busy this summer. They’ve:

  • Signed Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad for £60 million

  • Brought in goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea for £5 million

  • Wrapped up a £12 million deal for Brentford captain Christian Norgaard

On top of that, they’re reportedly lining up an offer for Chelsea winger Noni Madueke and are monitoring Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze.

What Happens Next?

The clock is ticking for Arsenal. The coming days—and possibly hours—will be crucial.

If Sporting hold firm and Arsenal refuse to go higher, the Gunners could turn their attention elsewhere.

But one thing’s for sure—this transfer saga is far from over. And fans will be watching every twist and turn.
