It’s not often that one family produces two elite athletes at the same time — but that’s exactly what’s happening in the Itoje household.
While England rugby captain Maro Itoje is preparing to lead his team into battle this weekend, his young cousin has just made headlines on a very different pitch.
Arsenal’s Newest Star from the Itoje Family
Seventeen-year-old Andre Harriman-Annous, a rising star from Arsenal’s academy, made his senior debut for the Gunners during their 2-0 Carabao Cup victory over Brighton on Wednesday night.
Playing 77 strong minutes at The Emirates, the young forward led Arsenal’s attack before being substituted for England international Declan Rice.
His debut marks the start of what many believe could be a promising football career — and no one is prouder than his famous cousin, Maro Itoje.
Itoje Beams with Family Pride
Though Itoje couldn’t attend the match in person due to preparations for England’s autumn clash with Australia, he followed the moment closely.
Speaking with pride, he described Harriman-Annous’ first senior appearance as “incredibly exciting.”
“I’m so proud and very happy for him,” Itoje said. “He’s worked incredibly hard over the last ten years.
They start so young — I remember seeing him train when he was just seven years old, and even then, it was intense! Everyone in the family is thrilled for him.”
Jokingly, Itoje added, “I’ve passed the baton now. I want him to fly.
He’s done amazingly well, and I hope it continues — not just because he’s my cousin, but because I’m an Arsenal fan too. It’s a double whammy!”
A Debut That Impressed Mikel Arteta
Before Wednesday’s match, Harriman-Annous had only been named in one senior matchday squad, but his performances at youth level caught the attention of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
Arteta praised the teenager’s hunger and focus, saying, “Since pre-season, I’ve been very impressed.
His mentality is fantastic — that’s the first ingredient for success. He’s desperate to achieve his dream, and he’s earned his chance.”
The manager went on to say that the timing of his debut was perfect, adding, “He’s been training with us consistently and giving us reasons to pick him.
Today felt like the right moment, and he certainly proved he’s got a future here.”
Lessons from a Champion Cousin
Though Itoje admits he’s no football expert, he’s shared valuable advice about mindset and professionalism with his cousin.
“It’s all about mentality,” he explained. “I wouldn’t give him football tips — that’s not my area — but when it comes to training, consistency, and handling pressure, those lessons apply in any sport.”
The England rugby star said they’ve had several conversations about staying grounded, especially with the spotlight that comes with success.
“Football and rugby both come with money, attention, and pressure,” he said.
“It can be tricky for young players to navigate, but Andre’s handled it well. His mum has been amazing and made sure he’s got the right support around him.”
A New Generation Takes the Field
As Itoje prepares for his own test match against Australia, he does so knowing the next generation of his family is making waves in English sport.
For Harriman-Annous, this is just the beginning — but with talent, hard work, and the backing of one of rugby’s most respected names, it’s a start filled with promise.
