Two decades after it first turned heads, Footballers’ Wives might soon be making a glamorous return to TV screens.
The early 2000s drama, known for its outrageous scandals and over-the-top characters, has recently found a new wave of popularity on ITVX — and that has sparked serious talk about a reboot.
A Possible 2026 Revival
According to actor Gary Lucy, who fans will remember as footballer Kyle Pascoe, ITV is exploring ways to bring the iconic series back — potentially by 2026.
Gary revealed that network bosses are “trying to bring it back,” though it could appear in a “slightly different format” than before.
The actor admitted he pitched the idea earlier this year, convinced it would “go down a storm” with both old fans and new viewers.
However, Lucy was quick to rule out reprising his old role as a player, laughing that he’s “too old for that now.”
Still, he’s fully behind the reboot, calling it a chance to reintroduce some lighthearted escapism at a time when viewers crave exactly that.
Nostalgia and Escapism
Reflecting on the show’s original run from 2002 to 2006, Gary shared fond memories of filming — and how real-life footballers would often approach the cast to say they loved watching it.
“People adored it,” he told The Sun.
“It was just pure escapism. You’d watch it and forget all the nonsense happening in real life.”
The series, which revolved around the fictional Premier League club Earls Park FC, was infamous for its glamorous chaos — a mix of luxury lifestyles, champagne scandals, and unpredictable twists.
Its blend of drama and satire made it a cult favorite among audiences craving something deliciously dramatic.
A Fresh Wave of Attention
Thanks to its revival on streaming service ITVX, Footballers’ Wives is once again enjoying its moment in the spotlight.
Fans have rediscovered the show, binge-watching storylines featuring a star-studded cast that included Susie Amy (Chardonnay Lane-Pascoe), Zoe Lucker, Christian Solimeno, Katharine Monaghan, Nathan Constance, and EastEnders star Gillian Taylforth.
A Reunion to Remember
Earlier this year, several of the show’s original stars reunited for a nostalgic This Morning interview, marking 23 years since the series’ first explosive debut.
Ben Shepherd and Cat Deeley hosted the segment, playfully teasing that the cast had “not changed at all” — even though the stars proudly showcased their evolved looks and styles.
Among the returning faces were Laila Rouass, Susie Amy, Gary Lucy, and Alison Newman.
Laila’s character, Amber Gates, remains one of the show’s most iconic WAGs — particularly remembered for the infamous scene where she crashes a party with a shotgun to avenge her husband’s death.
Iconic Roles and Familiar Faces
Amber’s dramatic exit from the show led to her managing her tennis-playing girlfriend, a role played by none other than Hannah Waddingham — who has since achieved global fame for portraying another powerful woman in the football world: club owner Rebecca Welton in Ted Lasso.
What Comes Next?
While ITV has yet to confirm an official production timeline, excitement is already building among fans.
Whether the reboot takes a modern spin on the original’s extravagant world or pays homage to its unapologetically wild roots, Footballers’ Wives looks set to deliver the same addictive mix of glamour, betrayal, and high-stakes drama that made it unforgettable.
The question now isn’t if viewers will tune in — it’s how soon they can pour the champagne and relive the chaos all over again.
