When you think of the Comrades Marathon, you imagine the grit, determination, and sheer willpower of runners conquering one of the toughest ultramarathons in the world.
But for 54-year-old Moira Harding, this year’s race became a fight for survival.
After crossing the finish line in Durban, she went missing and was found over 12 hours later in a critical condition — a story that captured the attention and hearts of many.
Found After Hours, Battling Hypothermia and Harsh Conditions
Moira had endured fierce weather during the night, which took a serious toll on her health.
When rescuers finally located her, she was suffering from severe hypothermia.
The situation was so dire that she needed an urgent airlift to the hospital, where she spent several weeks receiving intensive care.
It was a frightening and uncertain time for her loved ones and the running community alike.
Signs of Hope: Moira’s Remarkable Recovery Journey
By the end of June, there was a welcome update — Moira was showing encouraging signs of recovery and was preparing to leave the hospital.
In a heartfelt message shared with a runners’ community group, she expressed deep gratitude to everyone who stood by her side during this incredibly difficult chapter.
Gratitude for Support and Faith
Moira opened up about the harsh realities she faced:
“I want to sincerely thank all those who supported me and prayed for me when I went missing at the end of the Comrades Marathon and was found 15 hours later, unconscious and unresponsive due to severe dehydration and extremely low sodium levels, which caused disorientation and delirium.”
She continued, “Your love and prayers carried me through one of the toughest moments of my life.”
Thanking Everyone Who Helped Along the Way
She also extended her thanks to first responders, emergency teams, medical staff, athletics club members, family, friends, and every single person who helped in any way during her ordeal.
Above all, Moira praised her faith, saying, “All praise to my Lord and Saviour for protecting me throughout this ordeal and for healing me.
Without Him, this recovery would not have been possible.
I am now home and recovering well, and I look forward to the journey ahead with renewed strength and gratitude.”
