Royal author claims Sarah Ferguson’s family questioned her true feelings when she married Prince Andrew in London

When Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson stepped into the royal spotlight in the mid-1980s, they seemed like a breath of fresh air for the monarchy.

The pair’s playful chemistry, easy laughter, and lack of stiffness were a welcome change from the polished but strained public image of Charles and Diana.

But behind that cheerful façade, royal insiders — and even members of Fergie’s own family — weren’t so sure their love story was what it appeared to be.

A Lively Engagement That Captured Hearts

In 1986, when the couple announced their engagement in the gardens of Buckingham Palace, Sarah quickly became a media darling.

Her sense of humor and irreverence were instantly charming — she rolled her eyes, cracked jokes, and didn’t seem to care much about fashion.

“The public loved her,” royal author Andrew Lownie wrote in his book about the Duke of York.

“She was unpretentious, funny, and full of life — everything Diana wasn’t allowed to be.”

During the photocall, Andrew said he fell for Sarah’s “red hair,” while she gushed about his “charm and good looks.”

But not everyone was convinced their connection ran deep.

Family and Royals Shared Their Doubts

According to Lownie, even Fergie’s father was skeptical about her motives.

“She’s either in love with Andrew or in love with the Royal Family — and I think it’s the latter,” he allegedly said.

The doubts extended to the Royal Family, too.

While they had known Sarah since childhood — she grew up in their social circles and shared their passion for horses and outdoor fun — her personality sometimes grated on them.

“She was all high-jinks and practical jokes,” one insider said. “Andrew adored it, but no one else did.”

Queen Elizabeth was even rumored to have remarked after one meeting, “Does that girl never stop talking?” Meanwhile, Prince Philip reportedly dismissed her as “a girl on the make.”

The Whirlwind Romance

The pair’s relationship moved at lightning speed.

Sarah and Andrew met at Ascot in 1985, after Princess Diana suggested Sarah join a royal gathering.

Their first encounter set the tone — cheeky, spontaneous, and flirtatious.

“She was on a diet,” Lownie wrote, “and Andrew teased her into eating chocolate profiteroles, promising to do the same.

When he didn’t, she playfully whacked him. That moment of shared mischief sealed their bond.”

Less than a year later, they were engaged. But even Sarah privately felt anxious.

“While she was enormously happy, she was petrified about what she was letting herself in for,” a friend told Lownie.

Andrew, on the other hand, was eager to settle down. Having faced pressure from his family and coming off failed relationships, he saw marriage as an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.

He even told friends he was “a loner” who “really wanted to be married.”

From Fairytale to Scandal

The couple’s marriage began with excitement and laughter but soon descended into chaos.

By the early 1990s, their relationship was crumbling under media scrutiny and royal disapproval.

They officially separated in 1992 and divorced in 1996.

Then came one of the most humiliating royal scandals of the era.

Just months after the separation, Sarah was photographed on holiday in St Tropez — lying on a sunbed as Texan millionaire John Bryan kissed and sucked her toes.

The photos made international headlines, and the fallout was brutal.

Banished from Royal Circles

According to Paul Burrell, Princess Diana’s former butler, Prince Philip was furious.

Writing in his book The Royal Insider, Burrell claimed that the Duke of Edinburgh banned Fergie from all royal residences after the scandal broke.

Years later, Prince Andrew reportedly tried to mend bridges by persuading his mother to allow Fergie and their daughters to visit Balmoral for a weekend.

The Queen agreed — but she hadn’t told her husband.

When Prince Philip found out, he allegedly phoned the Queen immediately, warning, “I’m coming to Balmoral tomorrow — and she had better be gone.”

Faced with no choice, the Queen asked Andrew to tell his ex-wife she couldn’t stay under the same roof as Philip.

“She didn’t make a fuss,” Burrell wrote. “She simply packed her bags and left before he arrived.”

A Complicated Legacy

Despite the controversies, Sarah Ferguson has remained a constant — if unpredictable — presence in royal life.

Her marriage to Prince Andrew may have ended decades ago, but their bond, rooted in friendship and shared history, still endures.

While her critics once questioned her motives, and her behavior often clashed with royal formality, Fergie’s story remains one of resilience.

From being adored as the cheeky new duchess to becoming a tabloid target, she has lived every chapter in the public eye — unfiltered and unapologetic.
