What started as a simple Sunday drive for radio presenter Chellce AJ turned into a full-on shouting match — and now, it’s become a viral talking point about cyclists, drivers, and who actually owns the road.
Chellce, who was driving through the countryside near Romiley, Manchester on Father’s Day, says she was left shaken and frustrated after being stuck behind two cyclists who refused to ride single file.
“Jeremy Clarkson!” and Shouting Match on a Quiet Lane
According to Chellce, things escalated quickly.
One of the cyclists reportedly kept looking back at her car before shouting “Jeremy Clarkson!” repeatedly — a dig at the famously outspoken petrolhead — while the other stayed quiet.
She says she finally got the chance to overtake when the road widened, but not before one cyclist pulled up beside her car to continue the confrontation.
“He went mad,” she told MailOnline.
“He looked like he was just having a bad day, but I was literally shaking.
It was really weird.”
Posting the Encounter Online—and Getting Schooled
Chellce later uploaded a video of the incident to social media, asking viewers if she was in the wrong for expecting the cyclists to ride single file. But instead of full support, she got a reality check from the comments.
Many pointed out that under the updated Highway Code, cyclists are allowed to ride two abreast — and even in the center of the lane — especially on quiet roads or when visibility is important.
“It’s Just Confusing,” Says Chellce
While Chellce admits she wasn’t familiar with the finer details of the 2022 Highway Code changes, she still believes the rules are mixed messages at best.
“Yes, it says cyclists can ride side by side, but it also says everyone should be considerate.
I don’t get how blocking a whole lane is considerate,” she said.
She added that she had no issue with cyclists in general, but the man she encountered that day seemed to go out of his way to “make her feel like she didn’t belong on the road.”
“You Think You Own the Road”
During their fiery roadside chat, the cyclist reportedly accused Chellce of acting like she “owns the road” because she was in a “big flashy car.”
Chellce pushed back, saying she’s driven that same stretch for years.
“He said he’s ridden that road forever, and I said, ‘Well, I’ve been driving it forever.’
It was just ridiculous.”
She claims the man was in his 50s and seemed aggressive, while his cycling partner remained completely silent throughout.
Drivers vs Cyclists: A National Flashpoint
This isn’t the first time cyclist behavior has caused tension.
Since the new Highway Code rules came into play, many motorists have shared their own frustrations.
One local business leader even complained online about a group of cyclists who rode in the center of the road for eight miles, preventing cars from overtaking and “looking back and laughing.”
“That’s the day cyclists took over the roads,” he posted. “Selfish.”
Only 60 Seconds Caught on Camera
Chellce says she’s annoyed that she only managed to capture a minute of the incident on video.
“I was so annoyed afterward.
I wish I had recorded more of it.
The guy just seemed completely off.”
In the end, she says the experience left her confused and frustrated about the rules of the road — and what’s considered fair.
“I just think the Highway Code is too confusing.
I still don’t get why he was so angry.
It was honestly just strange.”
