Floyd Shivambu Announces Controversial Media Briefing Without Approval From UMkhonto weSizwe Party in South Africa

There’s been quite a buzz around Floyd Shivambu’s recent announcement that he plans to hold a major media briefing addressing some pressing issues in South Africa.

But the political party he’s currently involved with, UMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, says they had no idea this was coming—and definitely didn’t give it their approval.

Shivambu’s Surprise Media Briefing Raises Eyebrows

On Wednesday, June 18, Shivambu took to his social media to announce he would be holding a briefing to discuss critical matters facing the country.

However, MK Party’s official spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, told Independent Online that the party was completely in the dark about this event.

The briefing even used MK’s official colors, but the party insists it did not sanction or endorse it.

As Ndhlela explained, “I was not made aware of this briefing as the official spokesperson.

We need to wait and see what it’s about before deciding on any next steps.”

The Backstory: Shivambu’s Rocky Path in South African Politics

Floyd Shivambu has had a turbulent political journey over the last year.

After leaving the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in August 2024 — the party he co-founded with Julius Malema — he quickly joined the Jacob Zuma-led MK Party.

In less than a year, Shivambu climbed to the role of secretary-general and national organiser but was recently demoted to an ordinary Member of Parliament.

Interestingly, his name is missing from the MK Party’s official parliamentary list, adding to the confusion around his current standing.

Why Was Shivambu Removed as Secretary-General?

Tensions escalated earlier this month after Shivambu made an unauthorized trip to Malawi during Easter to visit controversial fugitive pastor Shepherd Bushiri.

The MK Party said this trip breached their constitution, specifically Section 3(j), which prohibits international travel that conflicts with the party’s agenda.

The party expressed concerns that his actions tarnished their image and values.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla’s Harsh Words Stir the Pot

Adding fuel to the fire, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, daughter of Jacob Zuma, publicly slammed Shivambu on social media in February.

She called him “useless” and “the worst thing that has ever happened to the MK Party,” labeling him a newcomer who hasn’t proven himself.

In response, Zuma himself condemned these insults as divisive and disrespectful, emphasizing the importance of unity and discipline within the party.

What’s Next for Floyd Shivambu?

With the MK Party publicly disowning his upcoming media briefing and ongoing internal conflicts, many are wondering what’s next for Floyd Shivambu.

Could he possibly start his own political party if he parts ways with MK? What do you think about his future in South African politics?
