For months now, many Orlando Pirates fans have been pointing fingers at Monnapule Saleng, blaming him for his extended absence from the team.
But behind the criticism is a deeper, more complicated situation than just form or fitness.
The 27-year-old winger hasn’t been seen in Pirates colors since December 2024, and now it seems he’s ready to push for a transfer when the upcoming transfer window opens.
A Star on a Modest Paycheck
According to Goal, Saleng’s salary sits around R70,000 a week—or roughly R280,000 a month.
Now, while that sounds like decent money to most people, it’s actually far from the top-tier earnings in the South African Premier Soccer League.
Some players are reportedly pocketing up to R500,000 a month.
A close friend of Saleng’s, Boikanyo Maine, shared his frustrations in an interview with Sunday World.
“He’s been one of the most impactful players,” Maine said.
“If he wasn’t important, Bafana Bafana wouldn’t call him up. Pirates really need to listen to what he wants.”
Saleng Was Unstoppable in 2022-2023
Saleng’s numbers during the 2022-2023 season were nothing short of elite.
He scored 15 goals and provided 11 assists across 30 appearances—earning him the coveted PSL Player of the Year title.
While he wasn’t able to replicate those same fireworks in 2023-2024, fans and analysts agree: his talent is undeniable.
Who can forget his stunning brace against Sundowns in the MTN8 semi-final back in October 2022? That 3-0 win remains one of the highlights of recent Pirates history, thanks in large part to Saleng’s magic.
Could a Transfer Be on the Cards?
So what’s next for the talented winger? With his playing time drying up and his value not being fully recognized—at least in terms of salary—rumors are swirling that Saleng may be eyeing a fresh start elsewhere this winter.
Will he stay in the PSL? Or take his talents abroad? That remains to be seen.
One thing’s for sure: fans will be watching closely, and many will be sad to see him leave if it comes to that.
