While most of Europe is still celebrating their Champions League triumph, Paris Saint-Germain wasted no time in shifting gears and turning their attention to the next big prize — the FIFA Club World Cup.
On a scorching Sunday afternoon in California, PSG put on a masterclass, brushing aside Atletico Madrid 4-0 in their Group B opener at the historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
Sizzling Start Under the California Sun
Playing in midday heat that climbed to a sweltering 31°C, the newly crowned European champions didn’t seem fazed one bit.
PSG were clinical, composed, and creative — a combination that left Atletico scrambling for answers.
Goals from Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha, Senny Mayulu, and Lee Kang-In capped off a dominant performance in front of an 80,000+ strong crowd.
“It was tough with the heat, but we did really well,” said Vitinha, who scored PSG’s second. “This was the perfect way to begin the tournament.”
Head coach Luis Enrique acknowledged the challenging conditions but was full of praise for his side: “Sure, the heat slowed things down a bit, but our preparation paid off.
This group thrives on competition.”
Atletico Struggles Exposed
On the other end, Atletico Madrid’s usually disciplined side looked off balance from the start.
And while Diego Simeone refused to use the heat as an excuse, he was honest in his post-match reflection.
“I won’t blame the weather. They were just the better team — plain and simple,” Simeone said.
“We were more organized in the second half, but PSG played at another level.”
That level was made clear as early as the 19th minute.
A slick one-touch sequence down the right saw the ball end up with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who teed up Ruiz for a precise low finish.
Atletico’s response? A string of rash fouls, including bookings for Clement Lenglet and Robin Le Normand, showed their frustration.
PSG Keep Momentum from Champions League Final
It felt like a continuation of the dominance PSG displayed in their 5-0 Champions League demolition of Inter Milan two weeks earlier.
Their passing game had rhythm, their pressing was sharp, and their composure under pressure was second to none.
Just before half-time, Vitinha added a second after another brilliant run from Kvaratskhelia down the left.
The midfielder glided into the box and buried a shot past Jan Oblak, giving PSG a comfortable cushion.
Disallowed Comeback and Missed Chances
Atletico thought they were back in it shortly after the break when Julian Alvarez slammed a low shot into the net.
But VAR quickly intervened, spotting a foul by Rodrigo De Paul in the build-up, and the goal was disallowed.
Despite Atletico’s improved energy in the second half, they never seriously threatened Gianluigi Donnarumma’s goal again.
Their hopes were dashed when Lenglet picked up a second yellow card and was sent off in the 78th minute.
To make matters worse, Alexander Sorloth had a golden opportunity to pull one back in the 82nd — only to fluff a sitter, skying the ball over the bar from point-blank range.
PSG Seal It in Style
PSG didn’t let up. Just minutes later, substitute Senny Mayulu pounced on a defensive error to make it 3-0.
And in stoppage time, Lee Kang-In confidently converted a penalty after a Le Normand handball to wrap up the 4-0 win.
Now all eyes are on PSG’s next match against Brazil’s Botafogo, also at the Rose Bowl on Thursday.
They’ll close out the group stage with a clash against MLS side Seattle Sounders on June 23.
