Erin Moriarty opens up about battling Graves’ disease and shares emotional messages with family in heartbreaking Instagram post

After months of staying out of the spotlight and social media, The Boys star Erin Moriarty has come forward with a deeply personal update: she’s been diagnosed with Graves’ disease, a serious autoimmune condition that’s been affecting her health in more ways than fans ever knew.

She Got Real With Fans on Instagram

The 30-year-old actress returned to Instagram with a heartfelt message to her two million followers, finally sharing what’s been going on behind the scenes.

Alongside some personal photos—including selfies and emotional snapshots from recent months—Erin detailed her struggle with the illness.

She began with a message of solidarity: “Autoimmune disease manifests differently in everybody/every body,” she wrote.

“Your experience will be different from mine.

My experience will be different from yours.”

Then she got honest about just how long she ignored the signs.

“If I hadn’t chalked it all up to stress and fatigue, I would’ve caught this sooner,” she said.

It was only a month ago that doctors officially diagnosed her with Graves’ disease.

What Is Graves’ Disease?

Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes the thyroid to produce too much hormone—something known as hyperthyroidism.

According to the Mayo Clinic, it can lead to a host of symptoms like fatigue, bulging eyes, anxiety, and even heart palpitations.

Other celebrities like Wendy Williams, Daisy Ridley, and Missy Elliott have also spoken about living with it.

Treatment Brought Immediate Relief

Luckily, once she got a diagnosis, treatment began quickly—and the results were almost immediate.

Erin said she felt a major shift just one day into the process.

“Within 24 hours of beginning treatment, I felt the light coming back on,” she said.

“It’s been increasing in strength ever since.”

A Message to Anyone Struggling With Their Health

At the end of her post, Erin urged others not to ignore their own bodies.

“If yours is dimming, even slightly, go get checked,” she advised.

“Don’t ‘suck it up’ and transcend suffering; you deserve to be comfy. Sh*t’s hard enough as is.”

She Shared Raw Moments With Her Family

Erin didn’t hold back—she even posted screenshots of her vulnerable text messages to her parents.

In one message to her mom, she wrote:
“I really really need relief.

I feel nauseated tonight. I feel so sh*t and removed from who I am. I can’t live like this forever.”

She went on to say, “There aren’t moments anymore, not even a passing five seconds, when I feel normal.”

In a later message to her dad, after starting treatment, her tone was completely different:
“I already feel a world of a difference… ‘D**n, this is how I’m supposed to feel? I’ve been missing out!’”

Erin’s Career Highlights

Erin Moriarty is best known for playing Annie January, aka Starlight, in The Boys on Amazon Prime Video.

Before that, she appeared in shows like Jessica Jones, True Detective, and Red Widow.

She’s also starred in films like The Kings of Summer, Captain Fantastic, and Catching Dust.

Her Break From Social Media Was Triggered by Criticism

In early 2024, Erin decided to step away from social media after facing harsh public scrutiny.

Megyn Kelly had publicly speculated about Erin undergoing plastic surgery, making comments about her appearance that went viral.

Kelly remarked that Erin looked like she had “Kim Kardashian lips,” and even accused her of having cheek implants and an unnaturally skinny nose.

Kelly went so far as to say the changes were a “sign of mental illness” and criticized young women for what she called “an obsession” with altering their looks.

Erin Clapped Back With a Heartfelt Statement

Shortly after the controversy blew up, Erin posted a long statement announcing her departure from Instagram.

She explained that social media had never come naturally to her and that she was heartbroken by the harsh reaction and assumptions being made about her.

“You’ve broken my heart,” she wrote to fans. “You’ve lost the privilege of this account.”

She said the experience left her feeling crushed. “The way that I have been spoken to, I will not accept,” she continued.

“You never know what someone is going through.”

She Also Set the Record Straight

Erin addressed the timing of her weight loss, noting that it was caused by stress—not cosmetic surgery.

She said she had no idea what was happening to her body until things spiraled.

“To receive a message about a disgustingly false, counterproductive… video of Megyn Kelly… has left me horrified,” she added.

Erin Has Returned With Strength

Despite everything—from health scares to public shaming—Erin is back on social media and back in the spotlight, this time on her own terms.

Her candidness about Graves’ disease, mental health, and self-image shows just how much strength she’s been quietly carrying all along.
