Savannah Guthrie faces awkward red carpet moment after being asked about her teeth during event in New York City

What was supposed to be a lighthearted night out supporting a friend turned into a cringeworthy moment for Today show host Savannah Guthrie.

While celebrating Hoda Kotb’s new wellness brand, Joy 101, at Current at Chelsea Piers, Savannah found herself caught off guard by a very personal question—about her teeth.

She had been taking part in a fun red carpet game with Parade Magazine, where she blindly picked and answered surprise questions written on folded slips of paper.

But when one slip asked if she had veneers, the playful vibe took a sharp turn.

Savannah’s Confused Reaction Goes Viral

On video, Savannah read the question aloud: “Do you have veneers?” Her reaction? Total confusion.

“What is that, like braces?” she asked the reporter, clearly puzzled.

The interviewer clarified: “The teeth.”

Savannah responded honestly, saying, “Well, I did Invisalign.

Is that what that means? What are veneers?”

Trying to keep the mood light, the reporter joked, “You would know if you had it.”

Savannah laughed it off, replying, “OK, I guess no. No, I don’t have veneers.

I probably need them, whatever they are.”

When the reporter complimented her smile, saying her teeth were perfect, Savannah politely cut the interview short, saying, “I’m going to get veneers.

I gotta go, getting veneers.” And with that, she walked off.

The Internet Can’t Decide Who Was in the Wrong

Naturally, the clip made its way to TikTok and quickly blew up, sparking a mixed bag of reactions.

Some viewers called out the reporter for crossing a line with such a personal question.

Others, however, were skeptical of Savannah’s response, wondering how a seasoned journalist like her wouldn’t know what veneers are.

Comments ranged from protective to critical:

  • “Why are people so rude to Savannah? OMG just let her be human, it’s literally not hard to be nice!”

  • “She’s a journalist and doesn’t know what veneers are?”

  • “She knows what they are, give me a break.”

  • “Oh come on…”

So… What Are Veneers, Anyway?

For those still wondering, veneers are thin layers of material—often porcelain—placed over teeth to improve their appearance and protect them from damage.

They’re popular in cosmetic dentistry for fixing chips, gaps, or discoloration.

Savannah may not have veneers, but she’s definitely no stranger to medical procedures.

Savannah’s Real Struggles Were with Her Eyes

While the spotlight’s on her smile now, Savannah has actually been through multiple surgeries—not for her teeth, but for her vision.

In 2021, she had her final eye surgery after a scary accident in 2019 when her son accidentally threw a toy train that hit her in the eye.

The injury led to multiple retina re-attachments and even cataracts.

Speaking to People magazine, she shared, “My eye is good.

The short answer is that it’s good, and I think I’ve had my last surgery. I really do.”

She added that her vision had improved dramatically since her final operation.

“I’m seeing well, and I just actually got a prescription for eyeglasses, which I haven’t been able to wear yet. So, I’m super excited to wear glasses.”

A Busy Life as a Journalist and Mom

Savannah balances her demanding career with life as a mom to two young kids—Vale, 10, and Charley, 8—whom she shares with husband Michael Feldman.

Between red carpets, health scares, and raising kids, it’s no wonder some questions catch her off guard.

So, whether or not she truly didn’t know what veneers were, one thing’s for sure—Savannah handled an awkward moment with grace, humor, and a quick exit.
