What started out as a typical evening drive in Surrey took a surprising twist for one British couple.
While cruising through the quiet roads near Dorking around 6pm on Tuesday, May 20, they spotted a familiar face behind the wheel of a luxury vehicle.
It turned out to be none other than Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella, allegedly caught using his mobile phone while driving his £140,000 Mercedes G-Wagon.
The footage, which was later shared by the couple, appears to show the 26-year-old left-back tapping away at his phone while in motion.
The driver and passenger say they noticed the striking vehicle first, but did a double take when they saw who was behind the wheel — and what he was doing.
“It Was Definitely Him – And He Was on His Phone”
According to the couple, they had no doubt it was Cucurella.
One of them recalled, “We looked over to see who it was and I clocked that it was Chelsea’s left back Marc Cucurella.”
They added that they circled back and passed the G-Wagon a second time to confirm — and sure enough, he appeared to still be using his phone.
“My partner in the passenger seat was able to get a video and some clear photos,” they said, expressing their concern over what they felt was a dangerous and careless act.
“It was really irresponsible of him, especially considering how dangerous it is to use a phone while driving.”
What the Law Says About Phones Behind the Wheel
In the UK, using a mobile phone while driving is taken seriously.
The law states that drivers caught doing so can face a £200 fine and six points on their licence — even more if the case goes to court.
It’s unclear whether the footage captured by the couple has been shared with authorities, but it definitely raises questions about road safety and personal responsibility, especially for high-profile figures.
On the Pitch: A Busy and Successful Season
Ironically, just over a week after the alleged incident, Cucurella was back in the headlines — this time for football.
On May 28, he started in Chelsea’s UEFA Conference League final match in Wroclaw, Poland.
Under new boss Enzo Maresca, Chelsea crushed Real Betis 4-1, with Cucurella playing a key role in the team’s dominant performance.
It’s been a strong season for the Spaniard, who has seen a resurgence in form after a rocky start at Stamford Bridge.
He moved to Chelsea from Brighton in a massive £60 million transfer back in 2022, but initially struggled with consistency and form.
Off the Pitch: A Tough Start in West London
Cucurella later revealed that his early struggles at Chelsea weren’t just about football.
Soon after relocating to West London, he and his family were targeted in a terrifying burglary that saw thieves steal around £62,000 worth of valuables — including luxury items like Louis Vuitton bags.
The incident left a mark on the family, with Cucurella eventually opening up about how the break-in and other personal issues affected his mental focus and performance on the pitch.
However, with time, he settled into his new environment and became an increasingly crucial figure for both Mauricio Pochettino and Enzo Maresca.
Behind the Scenes with “Married To The Game”
Fans have also gotten a glimpse into Cucurella’s personal life through the Amazon Prime reality series Married To The Game, where he stars alongside his wife, Claudia Rodriguez.
In its second season, the show takes viewers behind the scenes of the couple’s daily lives, including their emotional journey raising their son Mateo, who has autism.
The series dives into their challenges, including the impact of the burglary on the family and how they coped with balancing fame, family, and football.
It’s a raw and honest look at life beyond the pitch, with Cucurella’s emotional side shining through.
No Comment From the Club or Player… Yet
As of now, neither Chelsea FC nor Marc Cucurella himself has publicly commented on the alleged phone incident.
Whether disciplinary action or legal follow-up will take place remains to be seen.
For now, Cucurella remains in the spotlight — not just for his footballing talents, but for the scrutiny that inevitably comes with being a high-profile athlete in the public eye.
