Mark Hamill embraces emotional transformation as he takes on powerful new film role in Stephen King’s The Life of Chuck hitting South African cinemas

You probably know Mark Hamill as the face of one of cinema’s most iconic heroes—Luke Skywalker.

But in 2025, he’s trading in his lightsaber for something a lot more grounded.

And no, it’s not another galaxy-saving mission.

This time, Hamill is stepping into a deeply human role in a Stephen King adaptation, The Life of Chuck.

Taking On a Whole New Challenge

In his latest project, Hamill plays a character far removed from his sci-fi fame—a rough-around-the-edges grandfather with a complicated past.

It’s a role that’s introspective, emotional, and, in his own words, “indescribable.”

Speaking about the film, Hamill encouraged fans to let go of expectations.

“Go in unprepared. Don’t look up reviews.

Let it wash over you,” he said.

The film, based on a novella by Stephen King, takes a thoughtful look at one man’s life through small, powerful moments—while still carrying some of King’s trademark apocalyptic undertones.

Learning to Embrace His Star Wars Legacy

While most of the world can’t imagine a childhood (or adulthood) without Star Wars, Hamill says he hasn’t rewatched the original trilogy since their theatrical release.

For a while, he tried to distance himself from the role that defined him.

But he credits his late co-star Carrie Fisher for changing his perspective.

“She told me, ‘Get over yourself.

You’re Luke Skywalker.

Embrace it,’” Hamill shared with a smile in a recent interview with Today.

And he has.

While he continues to evolve as an actor, he’s also learned to appreciate the part that made him a legend.

His Hidden Talent as the Joker

Of course, if you’re a fan of animation or superhero stories, you probably know Hamill’s voice—even if you didn’t realize it.

After Star Wars, he dove into the world of voice acting and became the Joker for an entire generation, starting with Batman: The Animated Series in the early ’90s.

“Voiceover saved my life,” he said.

It gave him the freedom to explore dozens of characters without being pigeonholed by his on-screen image.

The voice acting community, he says, is full of warmth and creativity, and it’s kept him creatively energized for decades.

The Life of Chuck Hits Theatres Soon

Set for release on 13 June, The Life of Chuck is expected to be a soulful ride through memory, regret, and the beauty of everyday life.

Tickets will go for about R150, a fair deal for a film that promises emotional depth and powerful storytelling.

Mark Hamill’s Next Chapter Is Just as Compelling

Mark Hamill isn’t just revisiting old ground—he’s building new paths.

Whether he’s voicing a villain or playing a grandfather dealing with loss and legacy, he’s proving that there’s life after Star Wars.

Sometimes, the quietest roles say the most.

What Do You Think?

Have you watched Hamill in anything besides Star Wars? If not, The Life of Chuck might be the perfect place to start.
