It’s not every day that a club as decorated and passionate as Orlando Pirates finds itself searching for a new head coach.
But as the 2025/26 season approaches, that’s exactly where the Sea Robbers stand.
With Jose Riveiro officially stepping down after a triumphant spell, the hunt is now on for the next man to lead the Buccaneers into battle.
Jose Riveiro Bows Out After a Trophy-Laden Spell
Riveiro’s time with the Pirates wasn’t just memorable—it was historic.
Over his three-year stay, the Spaniard racked up five major trophies.
That includes an impressive three consecutive MTN8 titles and two back-to-back Nedbank Cup victories.
He didn’t just dominate on home soil either.
Under his leadership, Pirates climbed to second place in the Betway Premiership and re-established themselves on the continental stage.
Riveiro guided the team back into the CAF Champions League group stages for the first time since 2018—and they did it in style.
They not only topped their group but went undefeated, marching all the way to the semifinals. That’s a serious legacy to leave behind.
A Vacancy Opens at the Sea Robbers—and Familiar Names Resurface
With Riveiro’s departure, the big question now is: who takes the reins next?
Whispers have already started swirling, and one name is making waves—Rulani Mokwena.
The former Pirates interim coach, who has since built a solid resume with Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad Casablanca, is reportedly open to returning.
And let’s just say—he’s got unfinished business.
Rulani Mokwena Speaks Honestly About a Possible Return
In a recent appearance on Soccer Africa, Mokwena didn’t shy away from the topic.
When asked whether he’d consider rejoining Pirates, his answer was heartfelt:
“I don’t know, I’ve just arrived back in the country… To be honest I don’t know [about Pirates].
Of course I would consider it. It’s a big club and it’s still got people who are very close to me and to my heart.”
He had special praise for Orlando Pirates chairman, Dr. Irvin Khoza, calling him a major influence not just in football, but in life.
“I’m very, very fond of Doctor Khoza. He will always have a special place in my heart.
I’ve learnt a lot from him—about football, geography, humanity, religion… everything.”
That kind of emotional connection, mixed with experience, could be exactly what Pirates need in this transitional moment.
