Southern Africa’s Top Safari Guides Compete for Prestigious Safari Guide of the Year Award at Kariega Game Reserve in Eastern Cape

Every year, Southern Africa’s incredible safari guides take center stage as the Safari Guide of the Year Awards (SGOTY) return, shining a bright spotlight on those who truly bring the wilderness to life.

This event isn’t just about recognition; it’s about celebrating the passion, expertise, and dedication that transform a simple safari into an unforgettable adventure.

A Proud Tradition Rooted in Passion and Expertise

The SGOTY Awards were founded back in 2011 by independent safari guide Mike Karantonis, who teamed up with the Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) to honour guides across the region.

Michelle du Plessis, FGASA’s Managing Director, points out that for too long, field guiding was underappreciated.

Now, this competition highlights those who’ve pushed boundaries, sharpened their skills, and mastered the art of guiding.

The Exciting Challenge at Kariega Game Reserve

This year’s competition is set to take place from June 19 to 22 at the breathtaking Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape’s Kariega River Valley.

Here, the top five finalists will face a series of challenging and diverse tests designed to assess every aspect of their guiding expertise.

What the Finalists Will Face

The finalists won’t just be cruising through game drives.

They’ll be put to the test with bush walks, guided photographic experiences, and even bird identification through slides and sound recognition.

Their tracking skills will be evaluated, rifle handling assessed, and storytelling and hospitality talents judged—all wrapped into a showcase of all-around guiding excellence.

Meet the Top Five Finalists

The competition is fierce, but these five guides have made it through:

  • Cameron Schmidt from Pumba Private Game Reserve

  • Jason Gipson from Lion Sands Game Reserve

  • Kalie Otimile representing Tswalu Kalahari Reserve

  • Matthew Derry of Kwandwe Private Game Reserve

  • Megan Heramb-Smith, a freelance guide and partner at The Great Outdoors

Each finalist brings at least five years of experience, the right qualifications, and FGASA membership.

They were chosen after a thorough selection process involving interviews and evaluations.

Judges Who Know What It Takes

The judging panel includes some of the best in the business, like Mike Karantonis himself and Michelle du Plessis.

Karantonis emphasizes that this competition goes far beyond handing out a trophy.

It’s about recognising the dedication and hard work that guides pour into their craft.

“These guides don’t just lead safaris; they create unforgettable experiences,” he says.

Their work helps boost South Africa’s appeal worldwide, promotes return tourism, and supports local job creation and skills development.

Why Great Guiding Matters

Outstanding guiding is crucial not only for tourism but for conservation and cultural connection.

A truly skilled guide helps visitors connect deeply with the wild, inspiring respect and wonder for nature.

For South Africans, the awards are a reminder of the world-class talent right here at home.

The Nation Watches and Cheers

As these finalists prepare to showcase their skills in the heart of the Eastern Cape, the excitement builds.

The whole country eagerly anticipates seeing who will claim the prestigious title and continue the proud legacy of outstanding field guiding.
