If you’ve been following the Betway Premiership this season, one thing is clear: Mamelodi Sundowns’ Lucas Ribeiro Costa is cruising toward the top goal scorer award.
Barring an absolute miracle, Costa has already sealed the deal for the 2024/25 season.
A Winning Finish Caps Costa’s Impressive Goal Tally
Sundowns wrapped up their league fixtures with a solid 2-0 win over Magesi FC on Sunday, pushing Costa’s goal count to 16.
That puts him comfortably ahead of his nearest competitor, his own teammate Iqraam Rayners, who sits on 14 goals.
With just a handful of games left for others, the chase looks almost impossible.
The closest challengers are three players tied with eight goals each, meaning they’d have to double their output in their remaining matches just to catch up with Costa.
Matching Last Season’s Top Scorer but Still Far from the Record
Costa’s 16 goals match last season’s golden boot winner, Orlando Pirates’ Tshegofatso Mabasa.
However, nobody this season – or even last – has come close to breaking the PSL’s all-time record of 25 goals in a single season.
That record was set way back in 2004/05 by Zambia’s Collins Mbesuma while playing for Kaizer Chiefs.

Will Anyone Break Collins Mbesuma’s Legendary 25 Goal Record?
The big question remains: will anyone ever break that 25-goal milestone? It’s a tough ask, given how hard it is to hit even 16 or 17 goals in a season these days.
