A shocking turn of events has left a British teenager facing life in prison after her arrest in Georgia for allegedly attempting to smuggle 30 pounds of cannabis through the country’s airport.
Bella May Culley, 18, originally thought to be enjoying a holiday in Thailand, has now become the focus of an international investigation after her whereabouts were revealed.
The Discovery of Bella Culley’s Arrest
Bella, from Billingham, County Durham, was believed to be on vacation in Southeast Asia when she suddenly disappeared.
For several days, her family and authorities were unable to locate her, believing she might have been somewhere in Thailand.
However, it was later confirmed that Bella had been arrested in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, on drug-related charges.
Local footage showed her being escorted into the police department while in handcuffs, an image that shocked her family and friends.
Upon inspection at Tbilisi International Airport, Bella was allegedly found carrying 30 pounds (14kg) of cannabis, hidden inside 34 sealed packages.
Additionally, 20 packages of hashish were reportedly discovered in her bag.
The young woman is now facing serious charges related to the illegal purchase, storage, and importation of narcotics into Georgia, with the possibility of spending up to 20 years, or even life, behind bars.
Bella’s Family Struggles with the News
Bella’s family had been desperately searching for her after she stopped responding to messages and failed to keep in touch with them.
Initially, it was believed that Bella had traveled to Thailand in early May to meet friends.
She had last posted a photo on Facebook on May 5, and her mother, Lyanne Kennedy, was eagerly awaiting a scheduled FaceTime call with her daughter.
Unfortunately, that call never happened, and Bella’s sudden disappearance left her family in a state of shock.
Her mother, Lyanne, explained that Bella had flown to the Philippines after Easter and had been posting updates regularly.
However, once she made her way to Thailand, her communication ceased.
“I just want her home and safe, or at least to hear her voice again,” Lyanne said, expressing the pain of a mother unsure of her child’s safety.
The Conditions Bella May Culley Could Face
If Bella is convicted, she will be sent to Tbilisi Prison No.5, Georgia’s only female prison.
Reports from Human Rights Watch and other international organizations have highlighted the harsh conditions inside this facility, describing it as severely overcrowded, decaying, and in a state of disrepair.
The prison is said to have crumbling walls, filthy bathrooms, and overpowering smells of human waste and smoke.
These reports raise serious concerns about what Bella will face if she is sentenced to time in such a facility.
Tbilisi Prison No.5 has faced widespread criticism for its inhumane conditions, with the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture describing it as an “affront to a civilized society.”
With overcrowded cells and limited access to basic necessities, Bella’s future in this institution appears grim.
The Ongoing Search and Unanswered Questions
While Bella’s arrest in Georgia has provided some answers, it has raised more questions about how she ended up involved in such a serious crime.
Her parents had traveled to Thailand in hopes of finding her and getting more information, only to be met with heartbreaking news.
Bella’s father, Neil Culley, was told by police to contact immigration officials to track her last known whereabouts.
Meanwhile, a request for a return ticket to the UK, which never went through, has added to the confusion.
Lyanne, Bella’s mother, had voiced concerns about her daughter’s trip to Thailand before she left.
She expressed unease about Bella meeting up with friends from a previous trip, some of whom she didn’t know.
“I really didn’t want her to go to Thailand. I begged her to come home,” Lyanne confessed.
