Miley Cyrus is getting real with fans again—this time, through the raw lyrics and stripped-back visuals of her newest single.
With her upcoming album Something Beautiful just weeks away, the pop icon is pulling no punches when it comes to emotion, memory, and growth.
“More to Lose” Drops with Emotional Black-and-White Video
On Friday, Miley released More to Lose, her fourth single from Something Beautiful, and it’s already stirring up serious feelings.
The music video, shot entirely in black and white, opens with a powerful image—Miley, 32, in tears as she sings about a love slipping through her fingers.
In the chorus, her vulnerability shines through:
“I stay / When the ecstasy is far away / And I pray / That it’s comin’ ’round again.”
She continues, “I knew someday that one would have to choose / I just thought we had more to lose.”
From Glamour to Grit—Visuals Tell Their Own Story
The video doesn’t rely on flashy effects—it’s raw and simple, letting the emotion take center stage.
Midway through, Miley stuns in a sparkly strapless gown, before switching to a black trench coat and a Batman-style hood near the end, symbolizing the shifting phases of heartbreak and resilience.
A Song Born from Real-Life Pain and Reflection
Written and produced with a team of music powerhouses—Autumn Rowe, Michael Pollack, Jonathan Rado, Shawn Everett, and BJ Burton—More to Lose follows her earlier 2025 releases: Prelude, Something Beautiful, and End of the World.
The full album drops on May 30, marking her ninth studio album.
Although Miley hasn’t directly named anyone, fans believe the song may be about her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth.
The lyrics certainly seem to hint at a past relationship where she held on for too long—something she’s been open about in past interviews.
Miley Opens Up About Letting Go and Imperfection
Ahead of the release, Miley shared a teaser where she explained her creative approach:
“On a song like More to Lose, I tried to keep it a singular take,” she said.
“It’s more of a story.
I didn’t want to interrupt it or overthink it—I never wanted this to sound perfect. I wanted it to sound emotional.”
And emotional it is. One of the standout lines from the song is:
“The more I stay, the less I go / We’re toe to toe, but I’m hanging on the wire…”
These lines reflect someone torn between walking away and desperately hoping things will get better—many fans saw this as a nod to her and Liam reconciling in 2016 before their final split.
Looking Back at the Fire That Changed Everything
In a Spotify Q&A earlier this week, Miley revisited one of the darkest times in her life—the 2018 Woolsey fire that destroyed her Malibu home.
“Losing everything was actually a blessing,” she admitted.
It forced her to rebuild not just her home, but her life—choosing carefully who and what she wanted to carry forward.
“When my house burned down, a lot of my relationships burned down too,” she shared.
That fire marked a turning point. Miley and Liam split just eight months later.
From Darkness to Gratitude
Miley now sees those losses as vital to her growth.
“I would’ve told my younger self to appreciate those darker times,” she said during an event at Manhattan’s Metrograph.
“They only lead you into the light.”
The Grammy-winning artist first began recording albums back in 2005 at Rainbowland, a studio located on a two-acre property that was lost in the fire.
The emotional weight of that loss has stayed with her—even triggering anxiety years later.
Black Mirror Set and Real-Life Tragedy Collide
In a TikTok post from 2023, Miley recalled the surreal moment she found out her house was gone—while she was filming Black Mirror in South Africa.
“I was strapped to a gurney in handcuffs as my house was burning down,” she said.
Despite the heartbreak, she returned to set the next day to shoot her upbeat music video as Ashley O—demonstrating her signature grit.
“The show must go on,” she shrugged.
New Love and New Collaborators
Since her divorce from Liam, Miley has moved on both personally and professionally.
She’s now dating Maxx Morando, drummer for Liily, who also happens to be one of the eight producers on her upcoming album.
With Something Beautiful just around the corner, More to Lose feels like a powerful chapter in Miley’s continued story of self-discovery, heartbreak, and resilience.
