Just when it seemed like Eamonn Holmes might be turning a corner in his long and painful health journey, another unexpected setback has landed him in the hospital.
The 65-year-old broadcaster shared the news with fans on Friday morning, revealing that he suffered a painful fall at home and needed to be rushed to the hospital by ambulance.
Posting a photo from inside the ambulance to Instagram, Eamonn wrote: “An unexpected journey this morning… bit of a fall on the bathroom floor. Gosh it hurts. Thank you Ambulance crew.”
The image and his words quickly drew concern from followers who know this isn’t his first health scare.
Years of Chronic Pain and Ongoing Struggles
Eamonn’s battle with pain has been ongoing for several years.
Back in 2022, he underwent back surgery in an effort to relieve chronic issues.
But unfortunately, the relief didn’t last.
He’s been using a walking frame or a wheelchair to get around ever since, and earlier this year, he admitted that the pain just won’t quit.
“Even when the sun shines there’s pain,” he confessed on Instagram.
“Sometimes I feel I’ll never beat this disc immobility, but I’m determined to have a life… So pray for me, help me, or get out of the way, social media haters.”
From Hips to Shingles to a Damaged Spine
Eamonn’s health issues actually go back even further.
In 2016, he had both hips replaced after living with unbearable pain.
He later said the surgery felt surreal—like preparing for death without dying, as friends began to wish him well as if saying goodbye.
Then in 2018, another curveball: shingles.
It hit him just as his son Declan was getting married, nearly forcing him to miss the big day.
But the most relentless problem came in 2021, when out of the blue, he began suffering from excruciating back pain.
The Shocking Diagnosis That Changed Everything
After struggling for months, Eamonn finally found the cause: three slipped discs in his back.
These were affecting the movement of his right leg and caused such extreme pain that he couldn’t walk at times.
It left him leaning heavily on his family for help with the simplest things, which took an emotional toll.
“It’s been a difficult year,” he admitted at the time.
“For months now I haven’t been able to walk, sometimes at all, and it has really taken its toll on everyone around me too.”
The Staircase Accident That Nearly Killed Him
After undergoing spinal surgery in 2022 to help with his mobility, things briefly looked hopeful—until disaster struck again.
Just over two weeks into his recovery, Eamonn fell down 18 stairs at his Weybridge home, crashing onto the stone floor below.
The terrifying fall could have killed him, but he somehow survived with a fractured shoulder and further damage to his already weakened legs.
He later described it as a “massive setback” that would require more time off work and even more effort to heal.
Feeling Trapped by His Own Body
Eamonn has always been candid about his frustrations with losing his independence.
After his surgery, even with consistent physiotherapy, he found that everyday tasks were still difficult.
“Lack of mobility and depending on others stops me doing really simple things,” he shared online.
“It’s soul-destroying.”
The Wheelchair Reality and His Hopes for the Future
By the end of 2023, Eamonn had undergone another procedure to stretch his spine and neck.
Despite his efforts, he admitted: “I can’t run, I can’t walk, I can’t do anything except watch TV and eat.”
His words reflected the hopelessness many people in chronic pain feel.
Even something as ordinary as train travel became complicated.
Speaking on his Breakfast show in December, he made a quiet but powerful comment: “I’m now sort of wheelchair laden… You rely on a lot of people to get you on and off.
It’s very, very difficult.”
His co-host, Isabel Webster, acknowledged that many people share his experience, and she voiced what viewers were surely thinking: empathy, admiration, and concern.
What’s Next for Eamonn?
Eamonn Holmes remains determined to keep fighting, despite every setback.
He’s always honest about the toll it’s taken—not just physically, but emotionally and mentally, too.
For now, fans are once again sending him well wishes, hoping he gets the time, treatment, and rest he needs.
Let’s just hope this latest fall is the last surprise on a long road to recovery.
