Massive blackout shuts down entire island as Bali loses power and authorities rush to investigate the source of outage

If you’ve ever visited Bali, you know it’s a place full of energy—quite literally.

But on Friday, that energy came to a crashing halt. In a rare and chaotic turn of events, the entire island went dark in a massive power outage that’s left both locals and tourists scrambling.

Blackout Hits Island Without Warning

The power cut hit around 4 p.m. local time on Friday, turning off lights, air conditioning, traffic signals, and even beachside music.

From the city of Denpasar to the resort-lined coasts of Kuta, Bali came to a grinding standstill.

And what caused it?

That’s still under investigation.

PLN Scrambles for Answers

Indonesia’s state-run electricity provider, PLN, is currently trying to figure out exactly what went wrong.

A spokesperson said the issue may involve the submarine power cables that link the island to the mainland on Java—a system that supplies about 25% of Bali’s electricity.

They’re now in emergency recovery mode, attempting to stabilize the system before bringing power back online.

In the meantime, all power plants on the island have been shut down as a precaution.

Locals Struggle Through the Heat

For residents, the timing couldn’t be worse.

A local woman named Putri told Daily Mail Australia that the intense heat has made conditions unbearable.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever seen the entire island without power,” she said.

“And it’s really hot right now—no air conditioning, and many people can’t even work.”

Offices had to shut down for the day, and people are hoping the fix comes sooner rather than later.

But for now, it’s a waiting game.

Tourist Spots Try to Adapt

Some beach resorts, especially around Kuta, have stopped charging entry fees in an effort to keep guests happy—or at least distracted—as the blackout drags on.

Staff are doing their best to accommodate visitors with limited power and services, but it’s a tough situation with no clear end in sight.

Traffic Chaos and Social Media Panic

With traffic lights out, roads around Bali quickly became congested.

Police officers had to step in manually at major intersections to help untangle the mess.

Meanwhile, social media platforms lit up with posts from residents and tourists alike, all asking the same question: “When will the power be back?”

No Clear Timeline Yet

As of now, there’s no official word on when the electricity will be fully restored.

PLN is still investigating, and residents are clinging to backup generators where possible.

But with an entire island in the dark, the pressure is on.
