King Charles opens up about his personal cancer journey as he welcomes survivors and carers to a heartfelt Buckingham Palace reception in London

In a rare and deeply heartfelt message, King Charles has spoken with striking honesty about what it’s like to hear the words “you have cancer.”

Fifteen months on from his own diagnosis, the monarch is not just sharing his story—he’s lending strength to thousands of others who are navigating the same journey.

The King’s emotional words were shared ahead of a special evening reception at Buckingham Palace, celebrating the people and organizations who work tirelessly to support cancer patients and their families.

From researchers and nurses to fundraisers and community groups, the event was a recognition of the army of heroes behind the scenes.

A Personal Message That Struck a National Chord

Charles, now 76, is still receiving regular cancer treatment, though palace aides describe his health as moving in a “very positive direction.”

In his letter—written personally for the evening’s guests—the King called his diagnosis both “daunting” and “frightening.”

But it also, he said, revealed something extraordinary: the very best of humanity.

“Each new case is a daunting and, at times, frightening experience,” he wrote.

“As one among those statistics myself, I can vouch for the fact that it can also bring into sharp focus the very best of humanity.”

A Tribute to Dame Deborah James and the Power of Hope

In one of the most touching parts of his message, the King paid tribute to the late Dame Deborah James—known as “Bowel Babe”—whose parents were present at the reception.

He quoted her powerful words, which continue to echo across the country:
“Find a life worth enjoying; take risks; love deeply; have no regrets; and always, always have rebellious hope.”

Calling her a “moving inspiration,” the King said her message remains one of the most powerful calls to resilience and joy in the face of illness.

“To those who may be receiving upsetting news today or tomorrow,” he added, “I can only echo her words.”

Standing With Those on the Frontlines of Care

The King took time to personally thank everyone working across the cancer landscape—from doctors and scientists to support volunteers and family carers.

“You have my whole family’s deepest admiration and gratitude,” he wrote.

He reflected on his own experiences visiting hospitals, charities, and hospices through the years, observing the light and compassion that shines in the darkest moments of illness.

Whether it’s a hospice volunteer holding a hand, a nurse offering clarity, or a support group sharing strength—these, the King said, create what he called a “community of care.”

Shining a Light on the Real Heroes

Joining the King and Queen Camilla at the Palace were representatives from organizations including Macmillan Cancer Support, Maggie’s, Breast Cancer Now, and Children’s Hospice South West.

Each plays a crucial role in helping people affected by cancer.

There were also familiar faces lending their support.

Broadcaster and cancer survivor Adele Roberts, actor Richard E. Grant—whose wife passed from lung cancer—and reality star Ashley Cain, who lost his baby daughter to the disease, were all present.

Choir of Courage Brings Music and Emotion

The event also featured a performance from the Check + Change Choir, a group of 26 women who’ve bonded through their shared experiences of breast cancer.

The choir, brought together by presenter Lorraine Kelly, sang with emotion and pride for the royal audience.

Choir member Nikki Wheatley reflected on the moment, saying:
“You wouldn’t know from looking at the King that he’s unwell—and that’s the same with me.

Seeing him carry on while battling cancer is inspiring.”

A Mission Bigger Than One Person

Gemma Peters, CEO of Macmillan Cancer Support, praised the King’s openness and the visibility he’s brought to cancer issues.

“His Majesty has inspired many people to reach out for support,” she said.

But she also highlighted that not everyone’s cancer journey is equal—some face additional challenges because of where they live or who they are.

“We are on a mission to transform cancer care, but we can’t do it alone,” she added.

“It’s only by coming together as a community that we can truly make a difference.”

Leading With Hope, Not Just Words

Throughout his message, King Charles emphasized that while every journey with cancer is different, no one should face it without support or hope.

He made it clear that raising awareness isn’t just a royal duty—it’s something deeply personal.

His closing words were a rallying call to everyone fighting cancer and to those fighting for them:
“Your commitment to early diagnosis, better therapies and holistic care represents the best our country has to offer.”
