Australia and England Set to Compete in First Ashes Series in 22 Years with Matches Across Iconic UK Venues

After more than two decades, the iconic Ashes series is set to make a grand return this autumn, with Australia facing off against England in a thrilling three-Test competition.

The Kangaroos will be heading to the UK for this historic series, marking their first Ashes tour in 22 years.

A Long-Awaited Rivalry Revived

The Ashes series, which has been a part of rugby league folklore since 1908, has seen fewer opportunities for the two teams to square off since the dissolution of Great Britain’s rugby league teams.

After years of anticipation, the series is officially back, thanks to the Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC), who confirmed the event on Wednesday.

The last time these two teams met was during the 2017 Rugby League World Cup final, where Australia emerged victorious with a narrow 6-0 win.

Historic Venues Set the Stage

The Ashes series will kick off at Wembley Stadium on October 25, followed by the second Test at Everton’s brand-new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock on November 1.

The final match will be held at Headingley Stadium in Leeds on November 8. These locations add even more excitement, as they are all historic and new venues that will host this highly anticipated series.

Kangaroos Prepare for a Historic Tour

Peter V’landys, the chairman of the ARLC, expressed his pride in reviving the Ashes series, saying, “The Kangaroo Tours have always delivered thrilling contests and iconic moments.

Our current players haven’t experienced the magic of a Kangaroo Tour, and this series will allow them to create their own legacy alongside the legends of the past.”

The series, a huge part of rugby league tradition, will help support the growth of the sport in the northern hemisphere.

Mal Meninga and the Players’ Excitement

Australia’s coach, Mal Meninga, who played on four Ashes tours himself, referred to the upcoming Ashes series as “the ultimate” international rugby league prize.

He said, “We love the history, which dates back to the first Kangaroo Tour in 1908, but it’s been too long since we played England, especially in the Ashes.”

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Meninga believes this tour is the perfect opportunity for his players to stay sharp and show their best form.

The excitement surrounding the tour will undoubtedly fuel the team’s motivation to perform well, as they seek to make a statement leading into the World Cup.
