Christian Eriksen has recently shared that he’s preparing to leave Manchester United this summer.
The Danish international, whose contract expires in June, has not received any communication from the club about extending his stay.
With the uncertainty surrounding his future, Eriksen is now contemplating his next move.
Eriksen’s Decision to Move On
Eriksen, who has been with Manchester United for the past two years, made it clear that he expects the partnership with the club to end.
“I haven’t heard anything from the club, so I assume the collaboration will stop.
That’s how I interpret it,” Eriksen explained during his international duty.
Although he hasn’t yet decided where he will go next, the 33-year-old midfielder is ready for a new challenge and will explore offers from various clubs.
Possible Return to Ajax
One potential destination for Eriksen is his former club Ajax, where he spent several years before making a move to Tottenham in 2013.
According to reports from Dutch media, Ajax is considering a reunion with Eriksen, who made 162 appearances for them during his time in Amsterdam.
While Eriksen has ruled out returning to Denmark, he hasn’t dismissed the idea of joining Ajax, especially as the club continues to pursue top talent.
If Eriksen does make the switch to Ajax, he would reunite with Wout Weghorst, a former Manchester United teammate.
The two built a strong bond during their time together at Old Trafford, even seen hanging out together off the pitch before Weghorst’s departure in 2023.
Should Eriksen join Ajax, it would bring these two players back together at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
Eriksen’s Search for the Right Opportunity
Despite his current situation, Eriksen is not rushing into a decision about his future.
“I’m waiting to see what offers come in,” he said.
I’m not going to make any hasty decisions, but if the right opportunity presents itself, I’ll take it.
But I’m not sure yet what the right opportunity is.”
Having played in both Italy with Inter Milan and in the Premier League with Brentford before joining Manchester United, Eriksen is no stranger to international moves.
This season, he’s made 27 appearances, though many have come from the bench.
Still, Eriksen has demonstrated that he can still contribute effectively, especially when playing in a system that allows him to play to his strengths despite his lack of speed.
No Plans to Move to the USA or Return to Denmark
While Eriksen is open to offers from clubs in Europe, he has ruled out the possibility of moving to Major League Soccer in the United States or returning to Denmark just yet.
“The intention is not to stay in England,” he shared. “I’m not going to the USA, we’re not going that far.
We’d like to stay in Europe, but it’s too early for me to go home to Denmark.”
Eriksen’s Focus on the 2026 World Cup
One of the key factors driving Eriksen’s decision-making process is his desire to play in the 2026 World Cup.
The midfielder is determined to keep his form sharp for what will likely be his final major international tournament.
“I feel like I have a few good years abroad left,” he said, reflecting on his time in Serie A with Inter Milan and in the Eredivisie with Ajax.
“When you go back to Denmark, it’s really about family and finishing your career, but I’m not there yet.”
Eriksen’s next move is critical to ensuring he remains in peak condition as he eyes one final World Cup appearance, and he’s carefully considering all his options as the summer transfer window approaches.
