“But when one person doesn’t consent, it crosses the line into criminal behavior.”
Hopkins emphasized the importance of clear communication in intimate relationships, urging people to establish boundaries beforehand to prevent misunderstandings.
He added that some of Olds’ alleged victims reported blacking out after being choked, an alarming sign that consent may not have been given or maintained.
The Role of Social Media in the Case
The case against Olds gained momentum after a woman who met him online filed for a restraining order in January 2023.
Her claims of being choked during sex without consent were initially dismissed due to lack of evidence, but she persisted.
Taking matters into her own hands, she created a Facebook group titled Are We Dating The Same Guy?—a platform where other women began sharing similar experiences.
Soon, five more women came forward, strengthening the prosecution’s case.
Legal Defense and Supporters Speak Out
Olds’ attorney, Leonard Levine, argues that his client is being unfairly targeted, suggesting that the allegations were fueled by an online “campaign.”
Supporters of Olds have also been vocal, with one former partner writing, “If I ever felt uncomfortable, I would push on his shoulders and he would stop.”
Another described feeling “safe” even during their rough encounters.
Despite the letters of support, Judge Cathryn Brougham has refused to reduce Olds’ bail, which is currently set at $3.5 million.
