Helen Zille Acknowledges Public Concerns Over Illegal Drag Racing in Cape Town After McLaren Crash

Cape Town’s former mayor and the current chair of the DA’s Federal Council, Helen Zille, has responded to public worries about the increasing issue of illegal drag racing.

This comes just a week after Nigerian rapper 3GAR Baby, whose real name is Prince Daniel Obioma, crashed his R7 million McLaren in Sea Point.

3GAR Baby’s McLaren Crash Sparks Safety Concerns

The crash involving 3GAR Baby’s McLaren supercar, which was speeding down High-Level Road, has raised serious concerns about street racing in the area.

Just weeks before this incident, another high-speed crash involving a Ferrari on Buitengracht Street tragically resulted in the death of an innocent pedestrian.

These accidents have further fueled worries from the public about the dangers of illegal street racing.

Helen Zille Responds to Local Resident’s Concerns

In response to these incidents, Zille acknowledged the concerns of Cape Town resident Grant Richardson.

Richardson, who has been actively trying to address the issue, has sent numerous letters over the years to the city authorities, providing photographic and video evidence of the drag racing along the Atlantic Seaboard.

Zille confirmed that the City Traffic Control team has made several interventions to tackle the problem, especially during the weekends when incidents are more frequent.

In an email, Zille noted that the City’s safety efforts include dedicated traffic interventions on Sunday nights, when many of the racing issues tend to occur.

She also mentioned that the city’s Safety and Security’s Mayco Member, JP Smith, along with ward councillor Nicola Jowell, had contacted Richardson in an effort to address the situation and enforce local by-laws.

3GAR Baby Denies Reckless Driving After McLaren Crash

Meanwhile, rapper 3GAR Baby has denied any claims of reckless or negligent driving following the crash of his McLaren.

The incident, which occurred on March 1, saw the rapper’s car reportedly speeding at 200km/h, according to CCTV footage shared by the Atlantic Seaboard Community Forum.

Following the crash, 3GAR Baby took to Instagram to reject the accusations of reckless driving, suggesting that the video footage had been edited.

In a response to a critic on Instagram, he claimed that he was not driving recklessly but was instead trying to avoid hitting a beggar when he lost control of the vehicle.

He further explained that his actions to avoid a tragedy had resulted in the crash, including taking a wrong turn, which he believes contributed to the accident.

In a later Instagram Story, 3GAR Baby shared his gratitude for surviving the crash, saying, “Nah, small thing remain. Could’ve been all over! I can’t stop thanking God for life.”

Authorities Investigate the McLaren Crash

The circumstances surrounding the crash are currently under investigation by the police.

According to police spokesperson Wesley Twigg, two males were injured in the accident and were taken to a medical facility for treatment.

The police are looking into all aspects of the crash to determine the cause and any possible legal implications.

Public Reaction and Future Penalties for Speeding Drivers

As the investigation continues, public opinion is divided on whether 3GAR Baby should face severe penalties for his actions.

With illegal drag racing and reckless driving posing a significant risk to public safety, many are calling for stricter enforcement of traffic laws.

Whether or not the rapper will face charges remains to be seen, but it’s clear that this crash has reignited the debate over street racing in Cape Town.
