Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez reveals his plans to return to Premier League after rejecting international offers

It’s been a year since Rafael Benitez left his position as manager of Celta Vigo in March 2024, and now, he’s ready for a return to the Premier League.

After a tough spell in Spain, Benitez is looking for the right opportunity to make a comeback in English football.

Benitez’s Time at Celta Vigo

Benitez, who was sacked from Celta Vigo after just over six months in charge, had a difficult run in LaLiga.

In his 28 matches with the club, he managed to win only five games, leading to his dismissal.

Despite his struggles in Spain, his managerial record in the Premier League remains impressive, especially from his time at Liverpool.

A Glorious History in the Premier League

Benitez made a name for himself in England as Liverpool’s manager from 2004 to 2010.

His most notable achievement came in his first season when he led the Reds to a remarkable Champions League victory, famously overturning a 3-0 deficit to AC Milan in the 2005 final.

Benitez also had successful spells at Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Chelsea, where he won the Europa League in 2013 while acting as interim manager.

A Mixed Stint in the North East and Merseyside

After his time with Liverpool, Benitez managed Newcastle United, guiding them back to the Premier League in 2017 after they were relegated. However, his tenure at Everton was far less successful.

In what was a historic moment as only the second man to manage both Merseyside clubs, Benitez was dismissed after just 22 games with a win rate of only 31.8%.

Benitez’s Desire to Return to the Premier League

Now 64, Benitez has expressed his desire to return to the Premier League.

Despite receiving multiple job offers over the past year, he’s been holding out for the right opportunity in England, the league he loves.

Reflecting on a recent opportunity with Brazilian club Botafogo, he said the deal came close to materializing but ultimately didn’t work out due to its distance from his family.

“I have had a lot of offers during the year. But I was always waiting for the Premier League because it’s the league that I like,” he explained.

“You have to choose the right opportunity and hopefully, it will come soon.”

Benitez’s hopes of a Premier League return remain strong, and it seems he’s patiently waiting for the right project to come along.

With his wealth of experience and past successes, it’s clear he still has a lot to offer English football.
