Brendon McCullum Confident That Jofra Archer Will Return to Test Cricket for England This Summer

Jofra Archer’s return to Test cricket this summer is starting to look more and more likely, with England coach Brendon McCullum expressing increasing confidence in the fast bowler’s recovery.

Archer has been out of first-class action since May 2021 due to a series of injuries, but recent performances are showing signs of the player he once was.

Though England’s performance in the Champions Trophy may not have been inspiring, Archer’s ability to tear through the defences of South African openers at the tournament’s conclusion was a reminder of his exceptional fast-bowling talent.

With the Ashes series against Australia looming next winter, and a crucial series against India in June, Archer’s return could be pivotal for England.

McCullum Discusses Archer’s Return to the Test Fold

In a recent conversation, Brendon McCullum indicated that he plans to sit down with his players soon to discuss their ambitions for the summer.

As for Archer, McCullum expects the bowler to be eager to play Test cricket this year.

“After this, I’ll sit down with some of the players and work out what their ambitions are.

I would imagine Jof would be keen to play Test cricket this summer,” said McCullum.

Archer’s path to recovery has been a gradual process, with the ECB’s medical team carefully managing his physical return.

Although Archer hasn’t played a first-class match since May 2021 due to stress fractures in his elbow and back, he’s been building up his strength and fitness, making steady progress. His performances in one-day internationals this year, while not spectacular, show that he’s slowly returning to form.

Slow but Steady Progress for Archer

McCullum has praised Archer’s work ethic and resilience during his recovery process.

“Jofra’s been out of competitive cricket for a couple of years, and it’s taken some time for him to get back into the rhythm of game play. But I think he’s been really good,” McCullum shared.

Archer has bowled at high pace, with an increased workload, and has contributed to England’s campaigns this year, with solid figures across the board.

McCullum added, “We know how great Jofra is at the very top of his game, and to have him back, fit and excited about playing, is a real win for English cricket.

Adding him to the fast-bowling group we’re building only strengthens the squad.”

IPL Commitment Could Pose Challenge for Archer’s Test Readiness

One challenge in preparing Archer for the demands of Test cricket is his upcoming commitment with the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The IPL runs from the end of this month through to late May, and while the ECB initially blocked Archer from participating, they ultimately allowed him to play.

This means that Archer’s focus will temporarily shift from preparing for Test cricket to competing in the IPL.

To prepare Archer for the Test series ahead, it’s expected that the ECB will create a specific training program for him, which will likely include extra bowling in the nets.

This strategy mirrors the approach of India’s fast bowlers, who are using red Dukes balls to help prepare for their own Test series.

There are also reports that India may consider organizing a short training camp for their Test squad during the IPL, as they seek to improve their away form, especially after recent losses to England.

Looking Ahead: Archer’s Potential Impact on England’s Squad

With a healthy and fit Archer, England’s fast-bowling squad will have a major boost.

As McCullum emphasized, adding Archer to the lineup strengthens the team’s chances, especially with two important series coming up.

Archer’s skill set, once fully restored, could prove invaluable for England’s ambitions to reclaim the Ashes and take on India.

As Archer’s return edges closer, the cricketing world will be watching with anticipation to see if he can return to his peak form and make a major impact for England in the summer’s biggest Test battles.
