Cardinal Fernando Vérgez Alzaga, the prominent figure who has held key positions within the Vatican, celebrated his 80th birthday on March 1, 2025.
This milestone also marks the end of his tenure in crucial Vatican roles, including his leadership of the Governorate of Vatican City State and the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State.
Sister Raffaella Petrini Takes Over Cardinal Vérgez’s Roles
With Cardinal Vérgez stepping down, Sister Raffaella Petrini has been appointed to succeed him.
This transition signals the continuation of the Vatican’s governance under Pope Francis, a period that has seen numerous changes and developments aimed at modernizing the Holy See’s operations.
A Distinguished Career in the Vatican
Vérgez, who is a member of the Legion of Christ, began his religious journey with his ordination as a priest on November 26, 1969, in Rome.
He holds advanced degrees in philosophy and theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University and has a diploma in archival studies, which laid the foundation for his extensive Vatican career.
His work with the Vatican began in 1972, when he was appointed as secretary to Cardinal Eduardo Francisco Pironio at the Congregation for Religious and Secular Institutes.
After the cardinal’s death, Vérgez continued working with him at the Pontifical Council for the Laity.
His role evolved over the years, and in 2004, he moved to the administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See.
By 2008, he became the director of Vatican City State’s telecommunications department.
Rising Through the Vatican Ranks
Vérgez’s rise within the Vatican’s hierarchy was marked by several important appointments.
On August 30, 2013, Pope Francis appointed him as secretary-general of the Vatican City State Governorate, which was a significant step in his career.
Later that year, on October 15, 2013, he was consecrated as a bishop by Pope Francis, becoming the titular bishop of Villamagna di Proconsolare.
Key Appointments and Vatican Honors
In 2021, Vérgez was named president of both the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State and the Governorate of Vatican City State, positions he officially assumed on October 1, 2021.
This role followed the retirement of Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello.
A year later, on August 27, 2022, Pope Francis elevated Vérgez to the College of Cardinals, assigning him to the deaconry of Santa Maria della Mercede and Sant’Adriano at Villa Albani.
Additionally, in March 2023, he was appointed to the Council of Cardinals, further solidifying his influence within the Vatican.
Cardinal Vérgez’s long and dedicated service to the Vatican leaves behind a lasting legacy, and his successor, Sister Raffaella Petrini, is now poised to carry forward the work and vision of the Vatican’s governance.
