A disgraced former church minister and Co-op Bank chairman has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to fraud charges totaling almost £100,000.
Paul Flowers, 74, misused funds that were meant for his Alzheimer’s-stricken friend and her charitable donations.
The money was instead spent on a lavish lifestyle, including Class A drugs, expensive wine, and holidays.
Paul Flowers Misused Power of Attorney to Steal From Friend’s Estate
Flowers, who once held a prominent position in both religious and financial circles, took advantage of his role as the executor of his friend Margaret Jarvis’s will.
Jarvis, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease before passing away in 2016, had trusted Flowers with her financial affairs.
Flowers had Power of Attorney during her illness, and yet he used the money intended for her care and charitable donations for personal luxuries.
Fraudulent Acts Extended Before and After Friend’s Death
The court revealed that Flowers systematically stole from his friend, even before and after her passing.
The stolen funds came from her private and public pensions, as well as her savings, which Flowers had direct access to.
A total of £60,000 was moved into an account that Flowers controlled.
Although Jarvis had left specific instructions in her will for money to be donated to causes like an orphanage in South Africa and a donkey sanctuary, these organizations never received the funds.
Spending the Stolen Funds on Drugs, Holidays, and Luxury Items
Flowers’s spending was extravagant and reckless.
Instead of using the money for Jarvis’s care or fulfilling her final wishes, Flowers indulged in drugs like cocaine, funded holidays, and even bought expensive items like a £15,000 bespoke staircase and luxury carpets.
He also attended theater shows and stayed in high-end hotels, further squandering the funds.
The Impact on Jarvis’s Family and Charities
In a victim impact statement, one of Jarvis’s nieces expressed how the theft had devastating effects, especially if her aunt had lived longer.
Had the funds not been stolen, Jarvis would have been able to remain in her nursing home without the risk of being moved, which would have caused her significant distress.
The charities Jarvis had hoped to support were also deprived of much-needed donations.
Flowers’s Fall From Grace and His Drug Addiction
In his defense, Flowers’s lawyer explained how the former bank chairman had struggled with a severe addiction to cocaine, which worsened during his tenure as a clergyman and bank chair.
He also described Flowers as being in poor health, suffering from obesity, type 2 diabetes, and psychiatric problems.
The defense suggested that his actions were a result of his addiction, but the court remained unmoved.
Judge’s Harsh Words on Betrayal of Trust
The judge, Nicholas Dean KC, condemned Flowers for his betrayal of trust.
He emphasized that Flowers had taken advantage of a vulnerable friend who trusted him completely.
Instead of using the money responsibly, Flowers squandered it to support his own lifestyle, including funding his drug habit.
The judge labeled the case as one of pure betrayal.
Paul Flowers Faces More Consequences After Jail Sentence
Following his sentencing, it was announced that a proceeds of crime hearing will take place in July 2025.
The court will examine whether Flowers should be required to repay some or all of the stolen funds.
Flowers’s actions, which involved both his church and banking positions, are a stark contrast to his public image as a pillar of the community.
Paul Flowers’s History of Scandal and Public Decline
Flowers’s past has been marred by scandal.
He was previously exposed by The Mail on Sunday in 2013 for buying crystal meth and other drugs, leading to a rapid decline in his career.
Despite holding a position of authority, including chairing the Co-op Bank, his personal life and drug use caught up with him.
He was eventually banned from the financial services industry due to his inappropriate behavior.
The Consequences of Paul Flowers’s Actions on His Life and Reputation
Flowers’s fall from grace is a tragic tale of someone who once held a respected position but ultimately lost it all due to addiction and unethical behavior.
His actions have not only caused harm to those he betrayed but have also severely damaged his own reputation, leaving him facing legal consequences that will follow him for years to come.
