The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has announced that toll fees across the country will increase by 4.84% starting from Saturday, 1 March 2025.
This annual adjustment aligns with the Consumer Price Index (CPI), as reported by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA).
Toll Fee Adjustment Details for 2025
According to SANRAL’s statement, the 4.84% increase is lower than last year’s adjustment of 6.25%.
This year’s change was officially published in the Government Gazette on 7 February 2025.
The tolls for standard light vehicles using the N1 Platinum Route will now range from R7.20 to R108, while fees for the busy N3 route will rise between R20 and R347, depending on the distance traveled.
The Reason Behind the Fee Hike
SANRAL spokesperson Vusi Mona explained that the revenue generated from these toll fees is essential for the maintenance, operation, and improvement of toll roads.
It also helps service the debt accumulated to fund toll road projects.
According to Mona, these adjustments are crucial for ensuring that SANRAL can continue to provide high-quality road infrastructure that benefits all South Africans.
How These Changes Will Affect South Africans
Mona acknowledged the current economic challenges many South Africans are facing, but emphasized the importance of these fee adjustments to maintain the country’s vital road infrastructure.
He pointed out that a reliable national road network is crucial for providing essential services like electricity, water, sanitation, telecommunications, and public transport.
Despite the financial strain, Mona stressed that the goal is to keep delivering safe and efficient roads for all road users, which will ultimately add value to the lives of South African citizens.
