In a bizarre turn of events, Michael Wilhoite, the linebacker coach for the Denver Broncos, was involved in a physical altercation with a police officer at Denver International Airport.
The incident took place on Sunday, February 24, 2025, and resulted in Wilhoite being arrested and charged with felony assault.
What Happened at the Airport?
The drama unfolded when Wilhoite reportedly drove his Ford Bronco into the airport’s drop-off lane.
After parking the vehicle, he allegedly stepped out and left the car unattended.
A police officer approached him to inform him that leaving the car alone was not permitted.
According to police reports, Wilhoite responded aggressively, telling the officer to “shut the (expletive) up” twice.
Things escalated quickly when Wilhoite reportedly bumped his chest into the officer.
The officer, in turn, pushed Wilhoite back, which seemed to provoke him. Wilhoite then allegedly punched the officer in the face.
The situation spiraled further when the officer fell to the ground, and Wilhoite returned to his vehicle.
Officer’s Response and Arrest
The officer, still on the ground, deployed his Taser, hitting Wilhoite in the hip.
The shock briefly stunned Wilhoite, but he managed to get back into his car and drive off.
Police report that the officer suffered visible injuries to his knees and jaw pain.
Wilhoite was later apprehended and arrested. His bond was set at $5,000.
The Broncos coach’s attorney is expected to have him released from jail by Monday.

Wilhoite’s Career Background
Michael Wilhoite, who had a noteworthy NFL career before transitioning to coaching, played six seasons in the league.
He originally went undrafted out of Washburn University but found his place in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers.
Wilhoite played a key role on special teams and was even part of the 49ers squad during Super Bowl XLVII, although they lost to the Baltimore Ravens.
After his time with the 49ers, Wilhoite finished his playing career with the Seattle Seahawks in 2017, amassing 298 tackles, four interceptions, and one fumble recovery over 79 games.
Following his playing days, Wilhoite took on coaching roles.
He started with the New Orleans Saints, where he worked as a special teams assistant, before moving on to the Los Angeles Chargers as their linebackers coach.
Wilhoite’s contributions helped develop key players like Drue Tranquill.
However, the Chargers parted ways with Wilhoite in January 2023, and soon after, the Denver Broncos hired him as part of head coach Sean Payton’s staff.
