Steven Kitshoff’s Retirement: A Sad End to an Iconic Career
After a glittering career, Steven Kitshoff has been forced to retire due to a serious neck injury, following advice from specialists.
The decision marks the end of an era for both the Stormers and the Springboks, where Kitshoff made an immense impact over the years.
A Stellar Career with the Stormers and Springboks
At just 33 years old, Kitshoff’s career spans 138 caps for the Stormers and 83 appearances for the Springboks.
His time on the field was filled with major achievements, including two World Cup victories and a memorable British and Irish Lions Series win.
The neck injury, sustained during a Currie Cup match for Western Province in Kimberley last year, ultimately led to his retirement.
Despite undergoing conservative treatment and later stabilizing surgery, Kitshoff faced significantly reduced neck rotation.
After careful consultation with a neurosurgeon, it was determined that continuing to play posed a high risk of further injury.
The Beginning of a Rugby Journey
Kitshoff’s journey with the Stormers started at just 18 years old, when he was given special permission to train with the senior team.
His debut came in 2011, and over the years, he became a vital player in the Stormers’ pack.
He earned his first Springbok cap in 2016, and his career culminated with lifting the United Rugby Championship trophy in 2022, a crowning achievement in the Stormers’ first season in the competition.
His retirement leaves a significant gap, not only on the field but also off it, as Kitshoff was a fan favorite who embodied the values and spirit of the team.
A Humble and Grateful Player
Though his career has ended under disappointing circumstances, Kitshoff expressed his gratitude for the incredible opportunities he had throughout his rugby life.
Reflecting on his time playing at the highest level for both the Stormers and the Springboks, he shared his deep appreciation for his family, coaches, teammates, and fans.
“Playing rugby has been my life from a young age,” he said.
“I was lucky enough to live the dream of many young boys by representing the Springboks and the Stormers.
It’s incredibly disappointing for my career to end this way, but unfortunately, the risk to my wellbeing was simply too high.”
Kitshoff went on to say that while he would miss the thrill of playing, he looked forward to the next chapter of his life.
“I’ll be there at Cape Town Stadium cheering the boys on, just like I did as a youngster,” he said.
“I walk away from my playing days with so many incredible memories that I will cherish forever.”
Tributes Pour In
John Dobson, the Stormers Director of Rugby, paid tribute to Kitshoff’s incredible contribution to the game.
“Steven Kitshoff is an iconic player who will go down as one of the greats of our game,” Dobson said. “He started out as a prodigy and proved himself against the best in the world.
He will be remembered as a fantastic rugby player and a credit to his family.”
Dobson highlighted not just Kitshoff’s achievements on the field, but also his character.
“Beyond his undeniable impact on the field and impressive longevity, Steven stands out as a top human being who treated everyone with respect and always remained firmly grounded,” he added.
