President Donald Trump took to social media this weekend to mock federal employees who have voiced outrage over a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) email that asked them to detail their weekly accomplishments.
In a playful post on his Truth Social platform, Trump shared an edited image from SpongeBob SquarePants, showing the yellow sponge pondering over a notepad, with a list of “achievements” that included sarcastic comments like “cried about Trump,” “cried about Elon,” and “made it to the office for once.”
Elon Musk Defends Email Request to Federal Employees
The email in question was sent out by the Office of Personnel Management’s human resources department late Saturday, instructing federal workers to submit a list of five things they accomplished that week.
With a deadline of Monday at 11:59 p.m. EST, the request raised eyebrows across government offices.
Musk, defending his action, stated on X that failure to respond would be considered as a resignation.
This directive sparked frustration among federal employees, many of whom are calling it a form of “harassment” and a breach of workplace fairness.
One employee likened it to a “hostile work environment,” while others expressed concerns over the email’s timing, given that it was sent on a Saturday and prompted immediate attention that evening.
Unions Speak Out Against Musk’s Request
Federal employee unions have also voiced their opposition. The National Treasury Employees Union described the email as an attempt to intimidate hardworking civil servants.
They criticized it as an “irresponsible and sophomoric” move that distracted employees from their core responsibilities.
Additionally, the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) pointed out that the email did not cite any legal authority and argued that federal workers should not be answering to OPM directly but rather to their own agencies.
Concerns Raised by Various Federal Agencies
The controversy extends to agencies like the FBI and the Department of Justice, where leadership has instructed employees to refrain from responding to the email while awaiting clarification.
The FBI’s new director, Kash Patel, advised agents to “pause any responses” and assured them that the FBI would handle the process internally.
Meanwhile, employees at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which oversees the National Weather Service, were initially warned that the email might be a phishing attempt.
Some were even told not to access their work email after receiving it.
Musk’s Stance on the Email’s Effectiveness
Despite the backlash, Musk has defended the email, calling the task “trivial” and insisting that it is part of a broader push for accountability. He even remarked that the workers who responded effectively to the email should be considered for promotions.
Private Sector Comparisons and Support for the Email
Supporters of Musk’s email have compared it to standard practices in the private sector, where employees are regularly asked to report their weekly accomplishments. Ana Mostarac, a commenter on Musk’s X account, explained that this kind of request is common in management environments.
She argued that employees in the public sector should be held to the same standards as those in the private sector, given the significance of their work.
While some critics have described the email as undue stress and suggested a potential class action lawsuit, others, like nonprofit president Jeffrey Tucker, believe the backlash is overblown, citing that such reporting practices are typical when new management comes in.
The Fallout and What’s Next for Federal Workers
As federal employees await further guidance, tensions remain high, with many feeling uncomfortable about the directive’s implications.
While Musk stands by the request as a “routine” management tool, it remains to be seen how this situation will evolve, especially as more employees push back against the perceived intrusion into their professional lives.
In the meantime, the controversy serves as a reminder of the growing divide between private and public sector expectations and the delicate balance between efficiency and respect for government workers.
