The tension between Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and key figures within the Trump administration is intensifying.
Tulsi Gabbard, who recently became the Director of National Intelligence, has become the latest to stand up to Musk, following a controversial email he sent to federal workers.
Musk’s Email Sparks Defiance
Musk’s email to federal employees demanded that they outline their achievements from the previous week, submitting a list of five key accomplishments and copying their managers on the response.
This email is part of Musk’s broader plan to enforce a strict efficiency crackdown on government workers, which is facing increasing resistance.
Several prominent Trump officials, including Gabbard, Kash Patel, and others, have instructed their employees to ignore this request.
Gabbard, in particular, emphasized the sensitive nature of her department’s work and advised against responding to Musk’s directive.
Other key figures, such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and DHS Chief Kristi Noem, have also directed their teams to disregard Musk’s email.
Patel, the new FBI head, notably made a strong statement, clarifying that the FBI would handle its internal reviews independently, and no response to Musk’s email would be necessary for now.
Musk Threatens Termination
Musk’s email also included a stern warning: failure to comply would be considered a resignation.
He echoed these sentiments on his social media platform, X, asserting that the Trump administration had ordered him to be more aggressive in trimming government costs.
While it remains uncertain whether Musk can legally follow through with his termination threats, federal unions have raised concerns.
Many federal employees are unionized, which typically offers protections against arbitrary dismissal, including the requirement for employers to demonstrate ‘just cause’ before termination.
Unions have already filed lawsuits against the Department of Government Efficiency, protesting the government’s heavy-handed approach to staffing.
Legal and Political Challenges
One of the most high-profile legal challenges emerged when unions sued over Trump and Musk’s attempt to place 2,200 USAID workers on paid leave.
A temporary restraining order was issued to block the move, although this was later reversed.
The legal battle has highlighted the ongoing tension between the executive branch’s cost-cutting agenda and the rights of federal workers.
Musk’s bold cost-saving initiatives have drawn praise from some, while others, especially in Washington, are raising alarms about the broader consequences.
For example, cutting positions related to nuclear oversight at the Department of Energy sparked backlash, though Trump quickly reversed those cuts.
MAGA Republicans argue that many of these positions and programs are unnecessary, while others are concerned that critical work is being sacrificed for budget reductions.
Major Budget Cuts and Controversies
DOGE’s cost-cutting measures have made waves across the government, with the department claiming to have saved billions of dollars.
Notably, they reported cutting $1.9 billion in misplaced funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), a move they attributed to inefficiencies from the previous administration.
In total, DOGE claims it has saved $55 billion so far, citing efforts such as detecting and eliminating fraud, canceling unnecessary contracts, and selling off assets.
These savings were mainly concentrated in agencies like USAID, the Department of Education, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Department of Agriculture.
As Musk and the Trump administration continue to push their agenda, the future of government efficiency—and the tension between federal employees and their leadership—remains uncertain.
