In a move to reshape the Department of Justice, Donald Trump has instructed that all remaining U.S. Attorneys appointed during the Biden administration be fired.
The decision came late Tuesday evening, following a series of federal layoffs under the president’s broader efforts to reduce taxpayer spending.
Trump took to his Truth Social account to announce the change, stating that the DOJ has been “politicized like never before” during Biden’s term.
He called for an immediate “clean house” effort to restore public trust in the system, insisting that a fair justice system is essential for America’s future.
Overhaul of the Justice Department Underway
The shake-up at the DOJ is spearheaded by Trump’s appointed Attorney General, Pam Bondi.
Bondi is tasked with rebuilding trust in the U.S. Justice System, which Trump claims has been “weaponized” against Americans and political opponents.
The president has indicated that this overhaul includes removing judges appointed by Biden to help rebuild the department’s credibility.
While it’s not unusual for appointees to leave or be replaced when a new administration comes in, Trump’s administration has taken swift action to make significant changes.
Departures and Resignations From Biden-Appointed Officials
Some of the Biden-appointed U.S. Attorneys have already vacated their positions. Tara K. McGrath, who was appointed by Biden and served as U.S.
Attorney for the Southern District of California, was informed last week by the White House that her position was terminated.
Additionally, other Biden appointees such as the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia and the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Georgia resigned just before Trump’s second term began.
Trump’s Focus on Justice Department Overhaul
Trump has made it clear that one of his priorities in his second term is overhauling the Justice Department, starting with the confirmation of Bondi as Attorney General.
This week, the Senate will also vote on the confirmation of Trump’s pick for FBI Director, Kash Patel, who has promised to bring significant changes to the FBI and the DOJ as a whole.
With this continued shake-up, Trump aims to restore the DOJ to what he believes is a more fair and impartial system.
