Archdiocese of Chicago Removes Monsignor Daniel Mayall From Ministry Following Decades-Old Allegations of Sexual Abuse at St. Francis Borgia Church

In a recent announcement, the Archdiocese of Chicago has removed a priest from his ministry after allegations surfaced that he sexually abused a minor decades ago.

Cardinal Blase Cupich addressed the situation in letters sent to parishioners of two churches in Illinois, providing details about the case.

Details of the Allegations

The priest at the center of the allegations is Monsignor Daniel Mayall, who has served in multiple roles at Sts. Joseph and Francis Xavier Parish in Wilmette and St. Francis Borgia Parish in Chicago.

According to Cardinal Cupich’s letter, the alleged abuse took place approximately 30 years ago at St. Francis Borgia when Mayall was leading the parish between 1993 and 2002.

Mayall had continued to serve in parish roles at St. Joseph and other combined parishes from 2016 until 2021.

Action Taken by the Archdiocese

In response to the allegations, Cardinal Cupich confirmed that Mayall has been instructed to remain out of ministry and avoid all involvement with parish and school activities.

This move follows the archdiocese’s child protection policies aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of all parishioners.

Despite the seriousness of the claims, Monsignor Mayall has “strenuously denied” the allegations, although he has agreed to comply with the archdiocese’s directive to step away from his duties.

Next Steps in the Investigation

The archdiocese has reported the allegations to civil authorities, and the alleged victim has been offered support through the archdiocese’s victim ministry.

Additionally, the Independent Review Board (IRB) of the archdiocese will conduct its own investigation once law enforcement has completed its review of the case.

The Archdiocese of Chicago has emphasized its commitment to handling such matters in a transparent and responsible manner as the investigation moves forward.
